I'm gonna be getting a mid 90's Kona koa in a few weeks. I would like a modern 1x group set and a new set of rim brake wheels. All cheap cheap. What should I be looking for? I'm gonna be pooteling around town on it.

I did 1x10 deore group from aliexpress for my retro gt hybrid. Works perfectly and wasn’t too spendy. Looks slick too..
**well aware it’s not a mtb so sorry for putting in this thread. Just to illustrate the group on something of the era...

Pretty happy of the result :)

Nice work. The tanwalls look excellent, and the pink grips are just enough for the paint job without going overboard.
Ignore anyone who moans about the headset/spacer stack! If it works for you, then it's a winner.

AliExpress you say.....hmmmm.....i might just get one of those really cheap ltwoo groupsets.

Yeah I might put a bit too much spacers but wanted a more chill position. Might adjust than in the next weeks. :) -

The model is Legacy, I can’t find it in any of the catalog archives on retrobike but based on the parts & decals I’m guessing late 90’s/early 00’s. Hopefully someone can enlighten me.
It’s only chromo main triangle and the parts are bottom end shimano/promax. I chucked everything apart from f&f, stem/bars and brakes(I’d like some black deore vs tho). They did do a pretty decent spec hybrid called the Nomad which I’d love to get.
The main cool point of the legacy is it’s covered in rack bosses inc mid blade and double fork dropout eyelets so you could prob build a tourer from one. They’re hideous stock(mine had a full length chainguard as well, still got the chainstay mount which I should cut off at some point) but there’s def potential.
They come up on eBay/gumtree all the time for pennies so they were prob stocked by Halfords or similar back in the day.The ride is great, I’m a big fan.

Which brake levers are those?

Some dia compe, cheap and strong enough!

Very nice!
Afaik it’s identical to the “arette”? I bought one for my gf, great little bike. Was surprised to see the mid-blade and mount at chain stay etc.
I think stock it came with 3x7 nexave with promax V’s, only annoying thing is the 1 1/4” headtube. I wanted a sealed bearing headset but seems fairly difficult to source one
Might copy you and update it to a 9/10 speed, as the 7s is fine for the gf getting to work but with a mega range cassette the cadence jumps are a bit erratic

There were a couple of cool GT hybrid/"crossover" models in the early 90s, maybe 1991 which had 700D wheels (583mm bsd) rather than 700c (622mm) wheels. Pretty much the same size as 650B/27.5" (584mm). They also had horizontal dropouts on the fork, so you could adjust the front wheel position. Double bosses at both dropouts, 3 water bottle bosses and mid blade bosses. GT Tachyon and Continuum, Tange Infinity tubing I think.
Edit. In this catalogue:

Maybe USA only.
Also came with the cool GT flip flop stem. -

Cheers for the link, interesting. I never knew they made a tandem. Want!
Mine definitely started its life as a budget hybrid but the frame had potential so I highly recommend snapping them up when you spot them! I think I paid £50 complete on gumtree last year for mine.

debating going from flat to drop bars on the giant.....

DO IT!
Only issue I found, this morning as it goes, is the low riding position means when the bike goes down, it goes down! Me and the toddler went splat in some mud big time!

Is a GT tequesta good enough to build a fun gravel to ride around during the weekends? Not too heavy?
Found this one for cheap

Even higher end mountainbikes from early nineties are heavy. My Lx/dx/xt equipped Karakoram weighs a ton...

On the other hand: people used to compete on these heavy bikes so they're probable good enough for fun rides. ;-)
I have Kona P2 of this spec sitting in spares box, used but good as new. Any good to you?
