  • CAAD is still the massive front-runner for new road bike. But two things continue to play on my mind -

BB30: Is this going to be as bad as lots of people make out? I removed, regreased and refitted BB for my current bike yesterday (threaded frame, GXP BB) and it was very straightforward. I'm a shocking mechanic, am I going to be entering a world of creaky pain?

Rim or disc: Again, really undecided on this. Want to 'future proof' this build as much as possible but had one experience with road discs before, on my current winter bike. SRAM Rival 1x hydro, they are NOISY in the wet, they don't really stop any better than decent calipers and they're a pain in the arse to maintain. Its a QR setup though and I have read/heard that newer hydro sets are a different experience. As above, love the simplicity and ease of a caliper brake and as this is a 'best' bike, I'll not be riding it too often in torrential rain. Bigger clearances and more options on tyre width also appeal with discs though.

Interested in thoughts on the above!

  • i would add weight gains to the downsides of discs. unless you are spending loads, at similar budget and lesser maintenance costs, a rim bike is lighter. happy to be corrected, which i am sure i will be

No it's fine unless either you or your mechanic is a ham-fisted oaf.
