Dynamo Lights

  • No not quite that one, mine’s designed to replace a 10mm headset spacer, but functionally the same I guess.

Edit - this one, out of stock, like all the bike things I want to buy.

  • So my supernova pure front light failed and is not sending any power to rear light, but it still shines well. So was wondering is there any way to connect the rear supernova light directly to the dynamo hub? maybe soldering a resistor or something inline (not a electrician, but can solder basic stuff)

  • Not without building a whole rectifier and voltage limiting circuit. The rear LED needs a 6V DC current. The dynamo produces an AC output with much higher voltages - around 60V I believe.

    P. S. The fact the front light is still working suggests it's just a loose connection and that the circuits inside the front light are still working. If there's any soldering to do, I suspect its either inside the front light or in the wiring between the two.

  • I think shimano hubs come with a resistor. Youre welcome to try wiring mine in if i can dig it out

Edit: oh supernova DC nonsense, nvm

  • I had the very same issue so I got in contact with them and they arranged a repair - just had to pay for postage. It also stopped any sort of stand light.

  • The stand light on mine is also not working, but it was like that when i bought it second hand, thought that maybe these lights don't even have one. Will try to contact the supernova support then, it seems there is no easy fixes that i could do myself. thanks for the hint

  • Is there a dynamo usb charging thread that my 1st Dan Google Fu is missing?

    Need usb on the go.
So far it appears to be Igaro D2 or forumslader v5

  • I’m currently having a bit of a mare with a Cinq 5 plug so I would be interested to hear about any success stories / alternatives.

It charges my phone ok but usb power banks seem like a no go, can’t get any working with it.

  • I'm using the USB charge of B&M Luxos U with a Velogical dynamo. In general it charges my phone from 16km/hour. Pretty pleased and using the phone in airplane mode and GPS it can keep it at constant level, but depends a lot on the profile of the ride. If the phone is fully operational but without GPS active it is doing better. GPS, wi-fi and searching for signal masts are a major sourse of battery consumption.
This might be helpful https://www.cyclingabout.com/list-of-hub-dynamo-power-supplies-for-usb-devices/. The cycle2charge option seems interesting at a decent price.

  • I've already got a light and dynamo.

I'm after some real usage cases and suggestions of the charging options, the Igaro D1 looked good but is out of production. The D2 doesnt seem as good and the forumslader seems a bit Heathkit for the price.

  • I had lots of mixed success with various powerbanks until I settled on one that dealt with pass through charging as well as not needing a constant steady source.

Settled on a 10000 mah zendure. Figured I wasn't gonna charge it any more than that in a day.

Also phone doesnt charge so well attached directly to dynamo as stopping/starting doesnt do so good. Better off using the power bank as an inbetween if charging whilst attached to the dynamo. Lotsa newer power banks dont do pass through so make sure you get one that does if you go down this route.

  • Thanks good to know you have a working set up. I have it working with a really old cheap 1800 mAh power bank I found in a drawer but any of my new ones don’t work. The light on the Plug turns on and off (every 3-4 seconds) which makes me think it’s hitting the power overload.

Do you have a link / model number for your specific power bank? I read that RavPower banks were likely to be a compatible match but the one I just bought has the same overload issue.

  • Yep. Power bank is this one.

I remember doing a lot of research at the time and this was the one I found recommended by a few people. Can't remember where I read it unfortunately.

Not the cheapest of powerbanks but having bought that I now own other products by the same company. They're great.

  • The first thing to consider is whether a great big power bank would work better. Unless you have limited power demand and a large number of fast riding hours and multiple days with no access to mains power, USB dynamo charging can't compete, and that's before considering the expense and unreliability and faff factor.

(I've been through various setups and mostly given up. Paris-Brest-Paris was about the only event it made sense)

  • The D2 doesnt seem as good

    Really? Why's that?

  • ok, so these are just my thoughts, but not as good for these reasons.
    Max current o/p is lower.
The need to bodge a permanent power connection (sealants, etc...)
    No cache/buffer.
usb-c plugs in my experience are less reliable than the larger ones.
As a result will need to buy new sets of cables for usb-c to mini, micro etc for the Garmin and other bits (admittedly a minor concern).

If I tried to use those power pins in a high vibration environment at work my boss would kick my ass.

  • Finally got round to finishing it.

  • Thanks, that's very useful. I've got a D1 on one bike now, and suspect I'll be getting a D2 for another one. The benefit of the D2 appears to be that unlike the D1 it doesn't have to be in airflow to stop it from overheating. That might help explain why the maximum power output is lower.

  • That’s very good.

  • Following up with my Cinq5 Plug troubles - I tried the new RavPower power bank with a different cable this morning and it appears to be working!

  • Thanks, although means I have to always run the bagman. Can always remove the carriage. Might try find an old clamp to customise.

  • How do you find clearance is over the top of the bag for the light to be seen? I love how this looks, but I'd worry the bag blocks it.

  • Yeah that is perhaps an issue if loading up. I've left the other light attached for that occurance.
