Especially since that nice Mr Cummings (and by extension Mr Johnson) has made it so much easier for those supposed to be enforcing the rules to be doing their jobs.

Took the Belfast to Bangor train to go to the beach.
If you'd gone six miles further, you could have gone to Donaghadee, though.

Contrast the police action, reporting and commentary around a party in Brixton of 400 people and the 2000 gathered at Anfield.
Looks like the policing by consent model only applies in certain areas. -

Took me a while to realise what you meant but it's a good point.

policing by consent
Allegedly UK policing is 'policing of the community by the community' only it isn't. The police in London commute in and have contempt for the community.
In theory the Met are trying to address it but it's too slow.

Yeah I get that a lot.

Do bus drivers just shrug if you get on without paying? Dealing with unpleasant people that don't want to play by the rules is a shit part but still part of the job. It's why they are behind a screen and have panic buttons.
-
• #14636
Non payment must be what once or twice a shift on a bad one and it’s something anyone on the bus can see as wrong.
You might not have many allies if you try to enforce masking and it’s all day every day.
Shitty situation.

Issue there being they can't afford to live in the areas that they would want to I imagine, hence living in suburbia and then heading into work.

That goes right back to Ancient Rome. At least until the empire got really huge, the rule was that soldiers had to have farms in the area they were raised from. If they conquered somewhere, they were given a parcel of land to build a farm on there, and new soldiers were raised from the area as soon as possible. If you're emotionally invested in an area, you have that in mind when you make your decisions.
Or at least that's how I remember it. I stand to be corrected. Policing policy is fascinating shit.

That's a problem but doesn't explain why the police in suburbia also don't live in London.
(For me most of zone 4+ is suburbia)
Police in London earn more than in the surrounding forces so there is an element of qualify with Hertfordshire Constabulary and then transfer to the Met and work in Barnet for a pay rise. I can understand why an individual would do that but it isn't policing by the community in my book.
There are some 2016 stats in https://www.london.gov.uk/sites/default/files/sian_berry_police_housing_report_jun2016.pdf - 7% living in borough is poor IMHO.

Fun last night with circling helicopter and numerous riot vans to quell the #illegalrave at the Rookery. Seems to have not got violent thankfully.

I asked my brother in Amsterdam he said face mask policing is relaxed but nearly everyone wears them anyway.
The Netherlands is a little more collectivist and the government better at handling Covid information / the reopening I guess that plays a role?

US police in lots of cities are supposed to live in their home precinct for exactly the same reasons. They all game the system by living out in the suburbs and sharing a tiny studio flat address. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/most-police-dont-live-in-the-cities-they-serve/

I read somewhere today we're keeping the border closed until a vaccine is found... Could be waiting a while...

Most people are wearing masks here too. There was a bit of trouble last weekend with a few big parties in the city parks that got into it with the police and each other but for the most part people here view the masks as "doing their bit" whether they believe they're functional or not.
We're also getting 100% testing for citizens and cross-border workers in the next month or so.

"Behave or we'll close the beaches" sounds like it will do achieve nothing, because there are no immediate personal consequences. If anything, people are more likely to go to the beaches to get some fun before the beaches shut. "Behave or we'll detain you" might have an impact.

If they close the beaches I'll be really fucked off.
On the rare occasion I get to do a distanced visit to my still shielding Mum, I go for a sneaky run on the almost literally empty beach near their house. It sounds stupid, but that little bit of time on the beach is very important to me right now.

Just had a letter from school that my daughter will be receiving her year 9 vaccinations via a drive through station being set up in the city, both surprised and pleased with the solution
Why would people who aren't paid much out themselves at risk and step in and say "eh, no. You can't come on the bus/go the beach"
?
