  • will look for something local

I keep forgetting that not everybody is in London🙂
There will be jewellers' suppliers in most provinces

  • A pal is struggling to get a set of tyres on

I've heard of such people. I don't resort to anything other than the well known basic technique, and I haven't had to pick up a tyre lever either to mount or dismount a bicycle tyre in about 20 years, so either I've been unusually lucky or people are just incapable of following simple instructions.

  • Yep, got a source here in town.

  • Is bike24.com not loading properly for anyone else? I'm just getting a plain text version atm that doesn't want to work properly. I've tried chrome and firefox.

Also is anyone near Brecon in Wales by any chance? I'm tempted by a bike but the seller won't post.

  • He assures me he's tried this but I'm not sure I trust him... What's the name of the tool that helps get a clincher on and off a rim? I'm concerned he'll be out for a ride in the middle of nowhere, get a puncture and end up stranded.

  • bike24.com its just you

  • VAR tyre jack

  • 15 minutes in the shop, and it shows.
Crude, even primitive, but effective (in brass, because I had some laying about).

  • I have this Shimano 105 HB-R7000 front hub with traditional quick release. I have a different rear hub with bolt on, but I found a conversion kit so I would need just an individual quick release, similar to my front hub (with enclosed cam). Rear spacing is 130mm.
I searched quickly on Bike24 but I couldn't find the indivual quick release mechanism without the hub for the matching rear hub FH-R7000 ; dDoes anyone have a recommendation on where to find it?

EDIT: found it on SJS but it seems a bit harsh 25£, I guess I'll stay with my bolt on hub

  • Other closed cam skewers are available if you don’t mind it not being the ‘correct’ model.

  • no indeed as long as it is enclosed cam and works properly. Any recommendation?

And before searching this, I found fixed review on quick release rear hub for fixed gear use. Is anyone using this set-up or have a recommendation on go for it/avoid it, like @gbj_tester ?

  • Doesn't everyone have about 15 QRs in their spares box? No? Just me?

I think I've got quite a few spare, but I've have to check whether they're for 130 or 135mm hubs. Where are you based @paulbiche (PM me if you like)?

  • I have different things in my spare box, but no QR ha ha! I am based in France so with postage etc. depending on prices I find it could still be interesting, I will probably PM you at some stage.

I know it might sound weird to want to switch bolts to QR for fixed gear rear hub but I tend to carry my bike in the car and it does fit in the trunk only with both wheels removed

  • Left Maidenhead?

Yes, if you check my results on CTT you'll see that all my 2020 TTs have been ridden under the LFGSS.CC banner 🙂

  • Just me?

    Not just you🙂

  • Is anyone using this set-up

The two fixie bikes which have QR rear hubs also have suicide hubs and rear brakes, which is relevant.
All my conversions go the opposite way to what you're doing, from QR to bolts. QR is fine for racing when you have a following car with spare wheels, for all other purposes the tiny amount of time needed to use a tool to loosen the wheel is irrelevant.

  • Thanks for the feedback. Probably the best and cheapest solution to my case is to source an 6mm allen key and keeping it with the spare tube in the saddle bag haha.

Out of curiosity, why chosing to switch from QR to bolt? Is it because you can't tighten enough with QR, or purely for aero or weight reasons?

  • Is it because you can't tighten enough with QR, or purely for aero or weight reasons?

For the aeros. I'm using 6mm bolts, so the clamping is pretty much the same as a good QR, and I use chain tugs to hold tension.

  • Schwalbe blue tyre levers are as strong as tester's fingers sound.
