  • YMMV but I had a pair of SIDI Buvel (lower-end for the brand, but still £80 after discount) and to be honest they looked and felt cheap next to my previous pair of mid-range Mavic (which had a lower RRP).

  • I got some second hand, but effectively unused so they haven't stretched or anything, Lake CX237 Wide, and they are the widest cycling shoes I have ever tried. I imagine any of the Lake "wide" shoes will be very similar. Apparently they also do some "extra wide".

    How is the sizing? I'm s 9.5 and sometimes a 10

  • The Diadoras are still going strong ten years after @scherrit fitted the cleats and @jonny commented on them on a south western train, probably to Farnborough for a TNRC deluxe. ~ 40k

  • that's impressive stuff ludders. particularly knowing that everyone of those 40k would have been action packed.

  • The cleats aren't very worn because Ludwig doesn't get off his bike that often.

  • Plot twist: spanked all my disposable cash on a new frame so will be trying to get at least a few hundred more miles out of my Giro Privateers. They're still comfortable and the cleats aren't too worn, they're just a bit holey but it's dryish at the minute anyway.

  • I bought some Sidi Jarin’s recently to replace a years old set of Giro Privateers. I’d probably buy another set of Privateers instead in hindsight

  • I can second that, I had a pair for years that I used for commuting and cross and they were great

  • Haha, so after a long search trying to find some new shoes to fit my wide feet that don't cost a ton, I ordered some Bont Riot+ on a slight discount, coming in at £105. I wore them around the house for a few days to check the size in case I wanted to return them, and they were great.

Then I wore them during turbo sessions and short rides over the next week. Again - feeling great.

Then on Sunday I rode 200km, and during the last 80 km they were very painful. Right foot only, on the outside of my foot, just below my toes. My foot has plenty of room on the inside of the shoe, so if I consciously shifted it over that way it relieved the pain, but would always go back to being in the center of the shoe.

I'm going to try rotating my cleat to see if I can make my foot move inward slightly without having to consciously and constantly move it. Otherwise I'll try to heat mold the soles - it doesn't feel like I need much extra room.

Any other suggestions, or others who have had similar issues?

  • I think I may have sorted it. Rotating the cleat didn't work, but heat molding the shoes and using a shoe stretcher seems to have done the trick.

20 mins in the oven at 70 degrees C, then insert https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002DQ08DI and spread them as wide as possible, and then stick them back in the oven for another 10 mins. Feels good on shorter rides, hopefully the same is true after some longer stuff over the next couple of weekends.

  • Is this the shoe thread? I have some Empires that I used to get on with ok, but following a two year break now seem to cause pain like they're too narrow. Have done lots of running in the interim, have my feet flattened out?

Anyway, what looks good and suits a slightly wider foot? Used to love my S-Works but the new ones are megabucks and I've got some cheaper Spesh that I'm not too into. Happy to spend a bit but I do love a bargain.

  • If your feet are very wide then you're likely to be looking at Bont or Lake. If you're just a bit wider than normal (I hear Giro empires are very narrow) then things like Shimano and Specialized are meant to be good.

Well worth trying a few brands out via bike shops/friends/buying cheap used pairs and then selling them on if you think you might have difficult feet to find the right fit for.

  • I've had a pair of Shimano ME5 SPD MTB since January and they're agreeing with me so far although no major rides as yet - i found it sub £100

  • maybe try Rapha in the sale and return if they don't fit?

  • Yeah was thinking the Classic shoes look quite tasty. Have popped the high arch support inserts into the Empires as I need the support for running so might help in the meantime.

  • I've currently got some northwave GTs which I think are a middle ground between sidi/giro narrow and Shimano/Bont flippers.

  • Anyone else find SIDI dominators stiff and uncomfortable, especially the uppers? Tried out my old Mavics for comparison and even though they're pretty worn out (straps broken so can only fasten with ratchet etc) felt like like actually had some kind of padding in the upper which helped. The SIDIS upper is basically one stiff layer (had them for over a year so should have broken in). The sole/ stack height of the SIDI also feels really thick.

Tempted to go for something a bit more relaxed than a XC/ racing shoe next time. Having something a bit more practical kind of makes sense.

  • Can anyone recommend a pair of shoes with a wraparound upper design, so in the style of high end Shimano shoes where the shoe "encases" the foot. This is rather than the traditional tongue design.

I have narrow and low volume feet, find myself cranking the boas of my CX332's super hard, pinching the tongue and creating hotspots. Considered the Bont Helix, but understand they're pretty BIG in all areas. Any tips?

  • I have pretty narrow feet and fizik was the first brand that fit snug on my feet. Coming from climbing I know snug. They have woven tongueless shoes too.

  • Im looking for advice in the category of best cycling shoe covers. Away with rain and wind, breathable, packable. Has to work with mtb shoes. Fizik terra x5 to be specifik.

  • I have a pair of Terra X5s and use these overshoes: https://winstanleysbikes.co.uk/dexshell-heavy-duty-cycling-overshoes

Have worked pretty well for me so far and they're a good fit; my shoes are 45.5 and I went for the large.

  • Any have experience of the fizik power straps? Looking to replace my bad weather shoes.
Currently have the Rapha Climbers which are Giro’s
