I went to Morzine for a week's MTB action a few years ago. One of the guys was super-excited about being in the alps for the first time and within 30 minutes of us arriving went on a buying spree in the LBS purchasing two new tyres which were on offer at a great discounted price as well as some other bits.
We headed back to the chalet and he and another one of the guys spent about 90 minutes trying to get them onto the rim unsuccessfully until a third person pointed out that they were trying to mount 26" tyres on 650B wheels.
The LBS owner happily refunded him for the tyres but charged him full RRP for the correct 650B replacement set...

It's a bad, bad sign when someone shows up with a pair of tyres and pair of wheels saying 'can you help me I can't get these on', particularly if the wheels and tyres are supposedly decent kit and none of it was bought from the shop.
