Sounds like the bolts are rounded out?
Edit: Howard beat me to it.

preload bolt that threads into is made of plastic
Plastic as in a soft alloy?
-
• #5179
THanks @ChasnotRobert but the listing has ended
-
• #5180
No, plastic as in plastic. The pinch bolts however are made of cheese.

The heads are undersized and shallow so if you have a balled Allen key you can wreck them easily. Best to use a high quality Allen bit in a torque wrench. Threadlock is helpful too...

Actually Chas is right, I believe higher series Shimano chainsets have preload caps made of alloy, not plastic.

That said in a battle of cross threading the axle thread will always win vs. alloy or plastic pre-load.
And you don't need it anyway if in a bind and you've lost it.

Edited as seller has made a reasonable response.

Yes, the crank arm fixing bolt are made from plastic but Shimano do have metal alternate options though for the higher end stuff.
That said, it's a preload bolt and does nothing IF the crank arm bolts are done up to proper torque.

Huh, I’ve inadvertently revealed my lack of experience with higher series Shimano.

£15 as seen posted to you if you need them. Will double check threads etc.

Appreciate everyone giving their support and also directing me with where to buy or what to do to solve the issue.

Got a brand new DuraAce 9100 crankset here with a plastic preload cap - I've just checked. You can buy alloy ones aftermarket with an allen key fitting rather than the odd Shimano splined fitting, but I'm not aware of any Shimano cranks with alloy preload caps.
BTW, the screenshots posted above look nothing like any version of LFGSS I've ever seen.

I feel like we’ve gotten off topic here...

@T0mg I’d be interested in those cranks if @ImranKabir doesn’t want them.
Sorry to jump in. -

Saint and above and Dura Ace are aluminium ...

Personally I like the Raceface X-type interface which consists of a single 8mm hex bolt that you just do up f****ng tight.
-
• #5196
Get yourself a torque wrench when you fit them, or have it done by a decent shop.
Think the seller has a responsibility here.

Yeah, it was my misunderstanding. I thought it was being suggested that the crank arm bolts pinch bolts were made of plastic.
It was clarified that actually they are made of cheese and everyone carried on as before.
:-)

Yep.

Ha!

Well the one I've got in my hand straight from a Dura Ace retail crankset is definitely plastic!
It's possible to replace the pinch bolts. They are a weird size though IIRC.
If you were really desperate you could run a longer screw and pop an actual bolt on the other end...
You first step is to figure out if it's the bolts that are rounded, preventing you from tightening them, or if the threads are gone as well. Try threading a similar screw from the reverse side - I think they are M6 but will check.
