Bit late to the Kingston chat @howard, but I'm here too. Works for me. I'd echo what everyone else has said, although some of the scare stories about the town centre after dark are a bit misplaced nowadays I think (was certainly true 15 years ago though!)
Schools and green spaces/river are big pluses. The one downside is getting back from London centre late night - last train is relatively early, so its either train to Surbiton or tube to Richmond and bus/uber/hike from there, or cabbing it home, which is hexpensive. But, like you, kid-life means that's a rare occurrence anyway!
