I was well into adulthood before it occurred to me that the human in Tom and Jerry cartoons was probably a domestic servant.

I thought that was what the warning was for. The original cartoons were great and still are but I don’t see them on tv much - presumably for the obvious reason.

Nice

I think its more a case of Amazon owning the broadcast rights to classic T&J in the UK at the moment. I think the later series are covered under a different agreement. The old ones are available on Amazon Prime.

I have a small collection of original Tom and Jerry cels. One of my many nerdy collections.
The ones with the black lady in sell for a very high price compared to ones without.

Thanks for that. I have amazon prime but very rarely look at it. That’s my evening planned! Thanks

Jerry Lewis amirite?
Edit, was actually Mickey Rooney...
Looks like Jerry Lewis, either way, totally unacceptable character.

Fucking hell, so much for a not racist country, eh?

Sorry for new via gram, but this is worrying too. Loads of different local news seemingly reading from exactly the same script

Is this, I think?
Local News Stations Run Propaganda Segment Scripted and Produced by Amazon

John Oliver had a thing on that recently too.

Looks like different content but the same thing essentially. Not good.

This is good, local councils removing their statues of historical arseholes for us.

"but he also founded the scouts and they are different now!"
OK then put a statue of a worthy UK modern scout instead, problem solved.
What is irking is that it seems to be yet another "most of Conservatives/kippers/etc up in arms" VS "most Labour/LibDems/Greens may not agreeing perse but understanding the issues".
Would be nice if a Conservative thinking/figurehead would stand up and say "Hey remember we thought slavery was good, then it wasn't? We don't have to celebrate people with really problematic views, remember when we all, including commonwealth and mainland Europe fought against Hitler? That dude though Hitler was sorta ok, well most of us didn't."

inb4 Bear Grylls...

A statue of him would mean bickering about memes instead, might be win? ;)

That would require there to be conservatives who were capable of acting in good faith rather than cynically stoking the culture war for their own ends. I’ll hang on a minute whilst we all count how many of those there are.

In Charlton, there’s a Wharf, house, pub etc named after a business man who was in the slave trades just to make money to buy arts (Angerstein) and benefit from it.

I'd rather we were just done with statues all together. They're oppressively twee, like bad wallpaper.
-
• #60849
It's a proper shit pub too. The bulk of the clientele would be proud of Angerstein.

And that naming should be gone too.
Baden Powell's Nazi sympathy seems to be a more complex story, at the same time he fought for the colonial UK, so do we really need to celebrate him with a statue?
Just to be clear
Did you say "what about Breakfast at Tiffany's"?
