  • I think that this actually isn’t true.

    It flopped domestically but actually broke even on the worldwide market upon cinema release.

    It heralded the trend of studios producing loud action movies that will appeal to other cultures/markets ala fast and furious and transformers franchises. Bland action packed spectacles that have generic plots/actors/themes

  • Ah must have my wires crossed. I recall a film finally breaking even getting in the press and had recalled it as being Waterworld.

    Nothing nice to say about transformers but I think F&F deserves a little more credit.

  • I enjoy F&F also for what it is.

    I remember reading a really interesting article about how waterworld shaped the way studios produce and market films. If I find it again I’ll link it but it’s interesting to see the impact that one film that was seen as an abject failure had such a large impact on the way cinema was produced.
