  • Nice day in the workshop. Got one of the last very stressful steps done: neck pocket.
Then went on to shaping the body, did the edge chamfer with the router and started on the belly contour. Getting the curves just right and the chamfer nice and flat is hard work, but immensely satisfying.

  • Loving the grain on the last pic, everything's gonna be fine after all!

  • Looking good. What did you use for the belly cut?

  • I want to switch back to roundwounds after years of flats but I can't live with the zing of new ones. Anyone got some dead strings they want to swap for some new ones?

  • I hate guitar techs this evening, more news tomorrow when I've heard back from the big boss... But I'm fucking livid right now...

  • Rasps, files, planes, shaves, and a cabinet scraper (pictured).
Basically everything I could find. :D

@>>>>>> I'm loving the grain too. Even better, the wood has a history. It's from an ash tree a friend of mine got gifted. He then had it sawn and in several hours of work we carried the whole damn tree from a lorry he rented into his shed, where the wood was left to dry. A few years later he has now built his kitchen from that wood. And I a guitar. :)

  • Looking good - lovely sharp line on that belly cut!

  • This just appeared in my YouTube suggestions. Looks interesting can't imagine it's cheap and I'd be worried about the joins failing over time but it's certainly an interesting idea.

  • What’s going on with the guitar tech angst Joe?

  • Try a facebook bass page, I'm sure there's someone who loves fresh strings who'd be happy to trade! I'm currently 8 years into my current strings and have no intention of swapping 😂

  • so... my neighbor has lent me her brothers guitar (it was used for approximately 3 months in 2003) and have been playing it all evening, feels bloody massive (kind of understandable given ive been playing a ukele right..?) its nothing special a fender squier but fine for a free guitar, it was a bit dusty but pretty much in tune and fine after some minor adjustments

so took a tape measure out when my fingers started getting sore, its 20 inches long (50 and a bit cm), 16 inches (40.5cm) at its widest, and 5 inches deep (12.5 cm) (using inches as that seems to be the common thing online) it seems that it's a jumbo.....is that right?!

  • All sorted thankfully, will report back when everything's finished... Job that's been going on for eighteen months, looked like I was gonna get the guitar back in bits...

    @Sainsburys_Ed, pics please...

  • Bottle of wine for scale...

  • That's your regular dreadnought style guitar, looks great... The '0' size would've been cuter but you can't look a free guitar in the mouth... Hope you're well, mate!

  • Thanks, absolutely, well beyond my skill level right now! Will enjoy it for a bit and if I stick at it then I’ll buy my own and if not I’ll need to give it back at some point!

Very well here, loving lockdown life (obviously there are some downsides but pizza, riding bikes and time to learn new things is pretty good for the soul!) are you still in Aus? All good with you?

  • Good stuff... All fine here, yup still in QLD, it's Monday morning so I'm about to get ready for the working week... Enjoy!

  • That is a great looking bit of ash. What finish are you going to do?

  • Perfectly decent starter guitar that @Sainsburys_Ed. Stick some new strings on it and give it a bit of a dust and a polish and it'll feel much better. Maybe oil the fretboard too. I'd offer to give the once over, check neck relief etc but I can't remember where you are?

  • In Maidenhead... so turns out another neighbour had a unloved guitar knocking about, so I now have two! Who needs shops to be open?!

This one has nylon strings, same length but an inch narrower at the widest point and feels less like in playing my big brothers guitar!

  • More shaping! Plane, scraper, rasps, all the fun.

  • Crisp...

  • What does the hive mind think of this? I know bugger all about acoustics but I do like cheap and local....

  • That isn't cheap tho', and it's got loads of shit wrong with it... You can buy a brand new Martin for that price...

  • Thanks!
I'm thinking stain and oil, to show off the grain.

Have ordered some purple stain (don't hate me) and oil from crimson guitars. Thinking about a deep dark purple colour.

  • They are absolutely phenomenal guitars! Comparable to gear that's many many times the price. I think you'd be a fool to pass it by as long as the repair to the crack is well done!
