I'd use splendid cycles box as a guide. Biggest challenge with all these homemade boxes will be proper weatherproofing/canopy so you have an all year round transport for kids no matter what the weather.

This last winter in London was the wettest I can remember (been here since 1994) and our bike was used virtually everyday during the week and not once did the seating area get wet no matter how crazy the downpour was, plus once kids get cold/wet they have somewhere to shelter away from wind without windchill.

On the flip side I've been soaked loads this winter, which are boy always laughs about! :)
