3D Printing

  • I used CRDM for some parts recently - Selective Laser Sintering (SLS - I just wanted to emphasise the LASER part. as it's awesome) of a material called Duraform.

I'm very happy with the result- however I'd like to try a different supplier next, can anyone suggest one?

  • Anyone 3D printed a key?

I could get a key cut for our gate from our spare but I wondered if there was a way to copy it and print it cheaper than getting buckeroo in the booth to do it. Anyone tried?

  • Have had a key made from a key that was scanned in and email to the locksmith. They were the only people that held the blank.

  • anyone been doing any 3d printing lately?

  • Yeah, my colleague and I developed a prototype hunting rifle stock which we got printed for the client - shapeways refused to do it, then we found an Aussie company but it got seized in customs. Then when it turned up it was warped along its length, so we clamped it up, made some pie cuts perpendicular to the warp, then bored a hole through along the warp, then epoxied a stiff steel rod in the hole to straighten it out.

It could only ever be a hunting product, before anyone mentions the arms trade. And the only things that are hunted here are a) invasive & destructive and b) eaten, before anyone mentions unnecessary cruelty to animals.

Also have been printing lots of mandibles for dental surgeons, the data being taken from 3D scans of defective jaws (defective as in broken). We are doing this in-house for fast turnaround.

  • I am curious as to why 3d printing of spec frames isn't happening? Even if 3D printing isn't cheap yet there should be room for some profits within the £100 - 300 price range

Not sure if you'll read this two years on, but... it would cost significantly more than 300 quid to print a frame. Think more like 3000. And it won't be rideable. For the foreseeable future there are significantly cheaper ways of making a custom frame.

Smaller parts have reasonable cost. Big stuff's seriously expensive.

  • Does anyone know anyone who could print a replacement for a broken part that I have? It's a pinion-type part from a Versa VRS11 STI brifter..... The company that made them aren't responding to emails and the current Shimano alternative is ~£200....

  • I just saw this.
If this is deliberate, thank you, it made me laugh.
If not... I think "spec" is short for spectacles...

  • Fnar, I didn't even see that.

In answer to the original question, 2.5 years later:

I'm back in the UK now, new job in the industrial design industry, and still printing away...

  • Got all the parts together for my printed robot today. So much filing/removal of supports to do. I'm gonna try dipping them in acetone to get a nice smooth finish.

  • Does anyone know of a hackspace or commercial service that will allow use of a 3d printer for a couple of hours. Obviously charging for time and material, any where in London. I have few things I need printed out.

  • Anyone with a 3D printer bored and looking for a simple project?

I want a tamper made for my Handpresso portable espresso maker, rather than paying for this thing below:

  • If you can find a design you like here

    https://www.thingiverse.com/search?q=Tamper&type=things&sort=relevant

Or design your own and send the file to me, I'd be happy to print one for you.

  • design your own

    ROFL

Oh wow, there's a few of them already on there:
    https://www.thingiverse.com/search?q=handpresso+Tamper&type=things&sort=relevant

  • The tamper + reamer (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1680098) looks the most useful but I can't tell which end of it does the actual tamping. It would be annoying to tamp and have the detachable bit come off all the time.

Without knowing that detail, this one looks the best: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2254002 (I wouldn't need the grinder holder piece). Looking at it, I wonder how he gets the little domepod out of his filler without spilling coffee everywhere? Hmm

If you're able to print this one what would like you for it?

  • Nothing. Maybe a forum donation for postage.

I'm not near a computer right now but I'll take a look at the design a bit later and we can figure out the right dimensions for your portafilter.

  • You have a choice between semi-clear PETG or dark grey ABS. I've got other colours but not in a durable plastic that can handle being washed.

  • Sweet. Can do.
Not bothered about looks - I've been using an upturned squeezy honey bottle to this point. :)
The thing I have is black so whatever you reckon.

The design above should already be for my portafilter size. It's for a Handpresso so they're a standard pod size within that range of products.

My shitty verniers say 34mm at the bottom internal and 35mm at the top internal so the other guy's design that says "34.5mm" in the title is probably about right.

  • I've got a few print jobs queued up today. Will take a look at the design and print one tomorrow morning. Will let you know how it goes.

  • Thanks man. No rush, I've never owned a tamper for this and I've had that ti one in my todo list for ages because I don't want to pay that much for a handpresso tamper.
