Amazing all this. I have 3 sets of Acaias collecting dust in the shop which came with my espresso machine and I think I hate every single thing about them.

£2.50 and that's my final offer!

Seriously though, got a better idea? My grinder doesn't have a measured dose so I really should do a better job of measuring grinds into the porta. It's all by eye normally which works but you know I'm not perfect :)

My better idea is a scale which takes aaa batteries which you change twice a year and other than that it’s always ready to go, they tare when you ask them to, settings which don’t require a megadrive cheat code to access, in fact why do scale need settings? A timer is nice but who doesn’t have a smartphone in their pocket? Cheapy ones aren’t waterproof but you learn not to be a clutz with them and if you do break them they’re £20 so you could go through about 12 sets before you’re into Acaias, landfill not withstanding.

Actually balls to it. How much are they on eBay?
Mine are wider than standard to fit Sanremo drip tray cutouts. They’ve been used but I’m sure I have the boxes. Charging cables might be non standard as they fucked up early on. If anyone’s interested I’ll have a look at them on Monday.

Ha ha. No, although it did have a PAT test sticker on it as you had the machine at work.
Still going strong 9 1/2 years later.

My £15 Amazon scales take AAA batteries but are also rechargeable via usb. Tare but no timer. @hippy

In other news I stripped and deep cleaned my grinder for the first time in 5 years. It was pretty gross 🤢

They’re the ones. The sort you find in a ne’erdowell’s manbag.

All this talk about scales with fancy features, one that never seems to pop up is calibration. Is it just the case that scales rarely deviate much over the course of their lifespan?
-
• #17912
I’m not sure it matters much in practical terms does it? As long as they’re consistent and you’re always using the same scales.
Edit, the Acaias come with a calibration weight, to their credit!
-
• #17913
Yeah I guess even if they were to go off they'd still be relatively consistent across their lifespan. Good point

We had one of those at LMNH as our decaf/guest espresso grinder for a bit. Absolute pain to remove the upper burr. Think the threads must've got damaged at some point as there's no way they would need that much effort to remove and still sell them.
-
• #17915
Yeah it took me a while to realise it’s a reverse thread. Top and bottom burrs look pretty good now!

It was the fact that my previous druggie scales died and I'm trying to avoid landfill that got me into this scale conundrum in the first place.

Quote at me bro :)

Damn. Clearly my coffee machine wrenching is better than my bike wrenching :)
Actually, I do myself a disservice. Everything fucking works that was built properly in the first place.

How old are they?

Something else I can run through my ultrasonic cleaner. Which degreaser tastes good with yellowbourbon's espresso?

Of course.

If you decide to shift more than one, I’d be interested too, depending on condition.
Edit: Does this read as rude? Really wasn’t meant to. :/ Not sure if pre-coffee social anxiety...
To clarify, I’d be interested to buy one if you’re selling more than one, but don’t want to take the place of anyone who originally stated they want one, @hippy obviously.
Depending on condition just meant I might change my mind if the scale is war torn from being used in your shop.

The grinder is 7 years old but it’s only been out and in use for about two of those years in total; the rest of the time it’s been in storage. Hence my never getting around to cleaning it.

The S26 drip tray is 160mm deep so the big one might fit - it might depend on the location of any feet on the scale. The tray isn't dead flat either:
