Im holding off putting most stuff out until next weekend, if you can just fleece anything which is risky
-
• #1053
Saying it’s going to get to 2 degrees tomorrow night. Should I be worried about my potatoes? Got no fleece but have a couple of mesh Cloche type things I could use.

Earthing them up would be best bet

Not allotment, but produce growing - will containers be ok or should I stick them in my bike room overnight?

No harm doing it and you’ll not worry! Diy Cold frame would be good for next time.

Got a cold frame too, it’s just full 😂 hoping my early potatoes are gonna be fine as I don’t have room to store them inside. They’re in tubs and nearly flowering so fingers crossed

Just taken on a plot, 3 poles with some strawberry already in flower and a big rhubarb also in flower plus a whole lot of work to do!
Too late to use any rhubarb now? The chap "next door" said just cut it all down to ground and it'll spring back next year. -
• #1059
Cut it back, you’ll maybe still get some this year. Autumn, cut back anything not died back to tidy, mulch over and they’ll emerge next spring

Too late to use any rhubarb now?
The general rule of thumb we applied to rhubarb was to stop cropping from midsummer's day to give the plant time to recover for next year. It worked well, especially if you pile on the horse manure in the autumn.

It apparently got down to minus two here on Saturday night (Scotland)... we covered everything that we didn't think was frost-hardy with agricultural fleece but going to go this afternoon and see what the damage is. We've pretty much held off planting out, except for spuds and onions, so looking forward to getting going properly now.

Half arsed attempt with some decorating sheet yesterday. Earthed up and watered the rest, will see if it’s still there in a couple of days.

Small amount of progress today. Asparagus bed is built and the asparagus I’ve been growing in pits for a year or so have gone into the ground
Plenty of gravel and grit. Fingers crossed we’re in for the long haul
I’ve got more crowns coming so another bed will be built nearby

It's slightly trepidatious, isn't it? Planting something now and having no idea if it's going to take for almost a year.
Fingers crossed for you.

A clubman full of wood later and starting to make use.
First frame/ outliner made, 3 to go for the very top; one for little human1, one as a memorial for little human2 and a spare / possible future little humans
Then onto fencing ...

Yeah I know what you mean. My aim is add some tomato plants too as they pair well together so the space isn’t wasted

Have you decided on plants for the memorial? Hope you & your family are all doing ok considering.

We have been gifted a number of Imogen roses, (first middle name is Imogen rose) so will use one of those, some forgetmenot, lavender; nothing edible!
Thank you, outside time is helping, my wife’s growing to learn how I paint everything when dealing with things... We now have sage green fences, a pink gate and I’m trying to convince her the front door needs to go hot pink too!
-

Lovely. Sounds like it will be a nice space to remember her by.
Glad you're getting on ok. Hope the hot pink front door project makes it into the home-owners thread on here once done!

How’d everyone’s spuds get on? Just been up to the allotment for the first time since Sunday. Carnage for anything not covered and those covered hit pretty hard.

If it had to choose just one word to describe them, it would be 'devastated'

"Tato terror in Trafford"
Trouble was my garden spuds were fine, and I was having a lockdown low so arriving at allotment to this almost reduced me to tears.

I did finish my fruit cage though, which is also a homage to the humble zip tie

Sorry to hear that. Least we’re all in the same boat. I planted 4 spuds about 3 weeks later and they haven’t emerged yet so bit of hope.

Depends on plants. I put 3 courgettes in today, they could suffer so I've put a cover on them... Some other stuff might be ok & it also depends how cold it gets in your spot. Forecast here is 3deg but site is well sheltered from N & W winds so plants might feel a bit warmer.
