Thanks! The shelf is an offcut from the worktops - because we got Ikea cabinets we needed custom-sized worktops which you buy as 920mm x 3000mm lengths. They (Worktop Express) cut them down for you but give you all the offcuts too.
So we had two pieces of 3000mm x 300mm and a few other bigger offcuts too - this was just the beginning.

Shelves have happened.
It turned out the backs of the units weren't as square and even as I'd (naively) assumed - there was actually a 1cm difference between the sides.
And it also turned out that the shelf pins didn't want a 5mm hole after all, they wanted 4.5mm. Which again, naively, I discovered after drilling three holes which are now filled with No More Nails.
Still, it looks better than it did before. And will hopefully look even better still with the same oil as the worktops, and some books on (and a tidier kitchen).
