Considered getting 9/10sp period factory built wheels? Nucleon/Neutron are rather nice.
I assume you have the silver OS Record hubs? Those really deserve some nicer looking rims than xr31t. -

This sounds like what I've experienced since riding deeper section wheels on my Ron Cooper compared to the old box section rims. Oh dear, now I'm considering the sacrilegious notion of ditching the lovely steel fork that Ron forged for me in favour of a (painted?) Columbus minimal and A-head combo. Maybe one day when I've got some spare cash...

I did, but also looked at handbuilt which led me to Malcolm at CycleClinic. He likes and uses the xr31t. However I'd like to learn to build wheels, and have a relative who works in a LBS so he can teach me. Also thought I'd get more for my money going down that route. So basically that's why I wanted to build using xr31t. Definitely happy to change my mind though re using those rims. I'm looking for mid deep stiff wheels. Already have the hubs, yes 9-11 (OS? Original silver?) in silver and will have a budget of about 200-300 to get the rims and spokes etc

The minimal 1" is being discontinued. That's why they're all on sale.

OS as in Oversized axle. Those are some really fine hubs, seem to command a premium in the 28h drilling, I gave up on finding a reasonably priced pair a while ago. IMO the xr26 might be a better match for the drilling/given application. Easton r90sl would be fire, if you can get them at trade they may well be in your budget.
I'm building up a pair of 32h OS chorus on DT rr411, had the same hubs on open pros and have another pair on reflex w/ cross tubulars. Stiffness or rather lack thereof never really bothered me, but YMMV.
@cycleclinic is also a resident of the wheelbuilding thread #onhere btw -

Have to agree sapim race at 28 would save ££ & round spokes would look good with the skinny frame tubes

Lovely looking fork

Here is a picture of the hub I got. Bought on here. OS? Ive mostly come across him on WW, I'll check out the wheel building thread on here too. Tubulars Vs tubeless is a whole other discussion, it will be my best bike so quite fancy the ideas of giving tubulars a go.

Love the silver os hubs , I have some 32 with Ambrosio rims , if building again on a classic frame I’d go with tb14 or archetype in silver
-
• #2236
Yeah that's a good point. It's all a balance! I did think about the archetype. As I say I want mid deep so the xr31t is the deepest in my price range but that isn't the most major issue

How about some HED Belgium rims?
-
• #2238
So what is it that makes these rims better than the Kinlin xr31t? Aesthetics? Durability?
-
• #2239
There's a reason why so many wheel builders go for Kinlin rims. The Hed Belgium are also £280 a pair...
Regarding the stiffness conversation upthread I wouldn't worry too much about the front end, after all keirin riders manage just fine with quill stems on 2500 watts sprints. You'll probably feel the flex from your ST chainset way before the handlebars anyway. -

There isn’t anything actually wrong with the Kinlins and I am only suggesting the HED’s as that what everyone seems to be doing haha :) But I do know that the build quality on the Hed rims is second to none - they were one of the very first companies to embrace the wide rim of 24mm and everyone followed suit. They are slightly lighter and they build up brilliantly. They seem to be the wheel builders choice and they also have a partnership with Chris King which I think speaks volumes for the quality of the rim

Currently upgrading my 2003 LiteSpeed. It had ancient Ultegra (6500) and is getting 105 R7000 instead.
Am I the only one who thinks that the longer cage rear mechs are a bit fugly?
-
• #2242
Nope, they look shite!
-
• #2243
You can use a 30t sprocket with a short cage, that should be enough for a road bike for regular conditions no?

I keep looking at this thread and wondering if/when.

This was in classifieds. NICE

As do cassettes larger than 28 IMO
-
• #2247
Yes beautiful handling on that Cinelli and is quicker on tubulars, I find

Here’s mine. Old frame, newish groupset (compared to the frame), and carbon fork, wheels, bars and Seatpost. Nice to ride!

Finished a build using a frame I got from here a few months ago. First time build for me and overall pleased with it!
Forgot to put down the left hood before photo!

They do look pretty smart. I'll check the DBs out
