  • This is the back of our kitchen island. We deliberately got the middle unit narrower than the others to put in some shelves for cookbooks in between.

We are going to use some worktop offcuts for the shelves themselves, but I didn't want to use battens attached to the kitchen panels because I get the impression they won't be strong enough - they're just decor panels.

I have bought some twin slot shelving so that can hopefully spread the weight a bit.

Is there a way to attach the uprights from the twin slot shelving to the floor or to a piece of wood on the floor, so there's even less weight on the cabinets? Or will making sure they're standing on the floor do that for me?

    It's this kind of shelving:

    I hope that makes sense.

  • If you use a twin slot system wont you need to rebate them in the decor panel? Otherwise you’ll need to have the shelves notched, or cut shorter than the width of the opening, which will look weird.
If the decor panels are 18mm mdf I’m pretty sure they’d support shelf pins. I’ve used them on alcove shelves about triple the width you’re looking at with no issues.
Another option could be to use worktop offcuts along the back of the recess between the shelves as extra support. This would mean they wouldn’t be adjustable though of course.

  • Also @tbc

If the decor panels are 18mm mdf I’m pretty sure they’d support shelf pins.

Most likely 15mm/18mm chipboard (depending on manufacturer) but will still hold it.

I'm with trunkie on this, if the shelf fits the space well then all of the weight will be transmitted down through the decor panel if you put a screw or shelf pin there it will not pull away. By using the tracks you are overcomplicating things significantly and making the space less usable as well.

  • @Bobbo

I'd come to terms with having a 16mm gap at the back of the shelves but thought it wouldn't matter because they'll be bookshelves anyway.

I had thought I'd cut the shelves into T-shapes to hide the gaps at the sides, but if there's an easier way of doing it then I'd take that.

I think the decor panels are only 15mm and I assume they're fastened on well enough - but will battens definitely hold with such short screws? Or should I aim to go into the cabinet carcass as well?

    Thanks both for your help.
