What do you mean by a lesser quality finish?
-
• #2453
Pancenti Brevet (19mm) vs Velocity Quill (21mm) vs HED Belgium Plus (21mm)
So gonna be running 38s and 42s on some 28 hole wheels. Upsides, downsides to these guys? I already have a set of HEDs on my FC.

Considering giving this 650b lark a go, which involves a frame, and obviously wheels n tyres.
Anyone got experience with the Soma Grand Randonneur frameset? -
• #2455
Better move quick if you want the rim brake one. It's getting a redesign.
-
• #2456
Where'd you hear of this news?
-
• #2457
On the Soma riders Facebook page

Going disc? Which surely buggers up the "flex" due to beefing up the fork.
-
• #2459
Yep, it's a shame I think, as there's plenty of frames (including their own) that fill that criteria.
Are you set on cantilever or V brakes as you can convert most other frames with the Tektro extra long drop brakes.
-
• #2460
Nah, not set on anything yet, just talk in another thread about Crust Lightning Bolt got me hunting for available and cheaper 650b frames, really don't do discs, find well set up cantis or calipers are fine, and have the advantage of being more aesthetically pleasing. Probably won't do owt, was just looking for experience of a GR, from reviews seems to be a good intro to 650b/low trail cycling. Food for thought.

Is it a ridiculous idea to convert a retro mountain bike with 26" wheels to 650b? Only 12.5mm difference in rim height and apparently cr720s have enough adjustment.
-
• #2462
I did it on my Fat Chance, it does make it a bit more road friendly. I used ProMax adaptaterz.

Anyone wanna check my math? 700x28 = diameter of 678, 650x38 = 660, 650x42 = 668.
So if I go from a 700x28 -> 650x38 the bike will be 9mm lower 678- 660 = 18/2= 9 and if I go to 42 the bike will be 5mm lower 678- 668= 10/2= 5

Most of the larger 650B tyres seem to be 47mm or they're 27.5 MTB tyres going from 2.2-3" wide.
The quoted limit on the Tripster is 52mm. Does anyone make 650x52? How generous is their limit claim?
-
• #2469
Can't help with tripster clearances. But I have some Donnelly x plor MSOs in a 650x50 that I really liked.
-
• #2470
I've never heard of Donnelly - are they new or just a smaller company?
EDIT: "still has the quality associated with the old Clement name"
I wonder if these will fit? JP used them on TD

• #2471
Yeah Clement renamed themselves.
Terravails look good and everyone seems to like them, but they're a pretty penny.
-
• #2472
Those Don's are £65 a pop too :S
-
• #2473
I think they might be on planetx
I have conti race kings in 2" (50mm) which roll nicely. 2.1" is common enough in xc tyres but I can't fit that so not sure on range. Maybe vittoria mezcal?
-
• #2474
vittoria mezcal
Mmm mezcal. Actually it was these that got me thinking about what to replace the Horizons with...
-
• #2475
Mezcal has a 2.1 but that might be too big, depending on how conservative Kinesis ratings are

It is not mine.
I found the picture in the comments on TheRadavist (Wayne Reid / Pelago’s Rasket).

The frame is beatblasted and has a clear coating.
Which is unfortunately not a good lasting solution. Wet clear result in very quick corrosion under the clear. Clear powder has proven durable, but is a lesser quality finish and tends to go a little yellow over time.
