I was sad they missed off my personal set-up, especially given it's easy and comparitively cheap: 10 speed SRAM both ends.
For ages I was running a compact double with 11-36 cassette, which has a pretty decent 484% range. Admittedly, the low gear is not that low, so for off-road with luggage is still a bit much. All the same, I switched the 34 ring for a 36 (as I prefer a smaller gap up front) and 1:1 bottom gear has been fine for technical singletrack climbs unloaded.
If I fitted one of those 46/30 FSA chainsets, I'd get a 500% range with a 22.6 bottom gear which should more than have qualified my mullet. Hmph.

I've got exactly that at the moment. 46/30 and 11-36, and a 42t single ring, with a 2×10 GX. Works well.
The only problem is you can't get hydro disks on SRAM 10 unless you use something like TRP Hylex I guess. I am massive cable disk fanboy but for some reason I've decided to switch to 11 speed

My mulletish is currently 48/32 praxis front with 10 speed apex shifters and 11-40 sunrace cassette and GX mech.

I just built a new bike and was torn between getting a complete as a value-for-money way of upping to 11 speed and full hydraulics, but stuck with 10 speed and bought flatmount HyRds. V v impressed with them tbh, having come from using JuinTech R1s

did you need a wolftooth or anything to use that cassette? I"m running an X9 mech, but it was unboxed from Wiggle or someone and so had no paperwork with max tooth

• #10913
Nah, it's outside it's normal range but works fine, your frame may vary. Before my 11-36 XT and X5 mech wore out I was considering changing the cassette to the 11-40 but wasn't quite sure it would work based on looking at it wistfully.

I've got a sram x7 derailleur and have no issues with a 11-42 shimano casette. Works great when cycling trails, but the gaps in between gears are too big for gravel or tarmac roads.

• #10915
Is that with 2 rings?
-
• #10916
Yes, 28/42. As i live in the Netherlands i came to realize a 11-42 cassette makes not much sense for me though.

Gaps in your legs are too big m9.

Yes you can. SRAM S700 shifters. I have some. Deffers both 10 speed and hydro.

So annoying they decided to ditch the steel Sequoia and AWOL.

I still really want an AWOL

• #10924
Yes that's a shame! They seem like great bikes, maybe they didnt sell that well?

I’ve been very impressed by Juin Tech F1s. Great way to go hydro disc with a good value second-hand group.
