  • Extra smugness if you used one of those Japanese saws that only cut in one direction ;)

  • How big was the floor ;)

Looking to remove the lino fibers and level off a concrete kitchen floor. Knock off the high bits and then use some self leveling compound to make it flat and keep the floor line the same in the flat.

  • Have found that most need checking and it can be really satisfying when done.

  • Hugely impressive, great work.

How flat is the surface? Do you have any gaps between the blocks or layers of ply?

  • Am I the only one that is jealous of your patience and ability to stay focused?

Of and the workshop...that is just hate you ;)

  • Cheers guys.

@Bobbo, I’m currently in the queue to buy a belt sander.

@stevo_com some water based satin varnish. Needs something pretty heavy duty as it will be in constant use.

@tbc there are plenty of gaps. Sawdust and super glue will do the trick. Will do that when it’s flat.

@lynx I’m definitely nearing the end of my patience at the moment. Three solid days of work so far!

  • It doesn't look perfect, but it definitely looks better:

  • The Manns varnish from Wood Finishes Direct is good. I've used their water-based floor varnish which is obviously made to be hard-wearing.

  • Sawdust and super glue will do the trick.

    Why superglue over wood glue?

  • Thanks for the replies all. Only just seen them.
Went for the oscillating saw/notch approach and it was fine. 2mins and job done. I don’t know what I was worried about!

  • This is part of what secures my back doors at the bottom, but isn't performing very well. Can't find owt similar in the screwfix paper catalogue... any idea what it's proper part name is?

  • Is it from a rack bolt?

    One of these:

If so what you are looking for is a rack bolt keep plate. I can't find anywhere that sells them separately to the lock but Toolstation sells rack bolt kits in a pack of 2 for > £6 inc. VAT.

  • Flattened with the belt sander and sanded up to 240 with the orbital now. Really starting to come together.

  • I could not have done it. Chapeau and +rep.

  • About 8x13. Can't remember the grits used but there were three different ones.

  • Very nice.

What grade of birch ply were you using?

  • It was a "keep" of some description.
There's lots of options available, depending on the size of shoot bolt, Deadbolt that goes into.

  • I find Manns (and other water based polyurethane stuff) gives a bit of a plasticky finish.

Fiddies Clear Glaze is my go-to hard wearing, waterproof wood finish. Behaves like Osmo when applying, it soaks in like an oil rather than sitting on top like the Manns. Looks like an Osmo finish when it’s done too, but is much more robust.

  • Just BB grade birch

  • 1st coat.

    Probably 3 to go.

  • Great job, this is really coming together!
I’m sure you’ve already discovered him down a similar rabbit hole to me, but if you havent, check out Michael Alm on YouTube, he does a lot of ply pattern stuff.

  • Lovely. Whatcha use in the end?

  • Yup; I’m familiar with his work. Not got the tools to be as intricate / precise but I’m super happy with how this has come out.

Only thing That I was going to do was a 2mm round over but I’m super worried about tear out so I’ll leave it like this and see how usable it is with a crisper edge. For now it’s just softened with a sanding block.

  • Honestly just the screwfix no nonsense interior satin varnish. I’ve used it on a few things and they’ve worked really well.

  • Wanted some kind of circular/chop/mitre saw for my new workshop. This popped up at a very good price. Just need to figure out transport and find out exactly what model it is.
