  • The other day, I was asked by the checkout guy in one of my local shops (where I've been going for more than twenty years, although not that often), if I'd come to them because Tesco had long queues outside. It was a young kid, bless him. That Tesco hasn't even been open for very long, maybe two years or so.

  • I have no idea what local shop I'd go to for that unfortunately. We have all kinds of shops, including a greengrocer I buy fruit and veg from, I've never seen any of them carry flour to any non-negligible extent (I think the greengrocer has something like 400g bags of some very fancy special weird flour).

  • Er what? They should have plenty of flour. Obviously, the situation may be different in your area, perhaps it's Bread Thread Central, but as I say, there's certainly no shortage of flour up here (E5).

If in doubt where to go, just try them all one by one--perfect for a short, multi-stop bike trip. :)

  • Got bakeries local to you?

  • Good idea - one that I know of, might go and check whether they're actually still open at this point.

  • If you give your location/area someone might be able to suggest shops more specifically.

  • Putney - there's loads of shops of all kinds, I just really don't know where I'd go to find flour beyond obviously the supermarkets. The local corner shop doesn't have any (though it does have, and always did have, toilet paper). Possibly something over in Fulham? Don't know the area there as well.

  • If you have an Organic grocers they would be my first place to check.

Or an Italian deli or wholesaler

  • I'll do another google / map search. I know of one Italian deli over in Fulham, but I'm pretty sure they at least didn't visibly sell any flour (last went before the pandemic though, so wasn't looking out for it as much).

  • Deleted. Posted in wrong thread.

  • Pop over to the bread thread. There’s a couple of folks who get bulk bags and are willing to split.

My local wholesaler does 16kg bags and we get a couple and split between a few local neighbours.

  • I just bought a grain mill (as Me Julie likes baking and there is no flour in SE23), but I now need to find wheat/spelt/rye/etc, which is bound to be easier.

  • Places like bakery bits and Shipton Mill where you could usually buy grain are barely able to function due to demand for flour so you may find ordering anything from them a challenge/impossible right now.

  • Try phoning the Provender in honor oak?

  • I don't know that area at all... Try joining your local neighborhood forum/facebook group, our one has been really useful for this kind of thing. Either which local shops have what, or people sharing supplies and bulk orders.

  • I was under the impression that the level of demand for flour is not unusual-but the rise in consumer demand and slump in food outlet demand has meant there’s no packaging for the stuff that would otherwise be going to bakeries and restaurants in bulk.

    Could be bollocks tho

  • Could be bollocks tho

No that does make a lot of sense. All the more annoying as I really don't need fancy packaging, I'd buy the stuff loose if needs be.

  • ^^ This. It's easier to pack into 20kg-80kg sacks than 500g-1.5kg paper packets. There's plenty of flour, they just can't package the stuff. If you can contact a small mill and have the money there's every chance of you getting a fuck load of flour. Several in Devon are delivering industrial size sacks to local homes.

  • What's the best way to have a few square km of the openstreetmap cycling map saved to my android phone. Preferably with some level of routing or search. Don't mind paying for a one off but not a subscription.

  • Similar reason for the toilet paper shortage (stockpiling actually only had a small effect apparently)
Two types of paper, consumer and commercial and they have completely different supply chains and packaging etc. Commercial demand dries up as no one is shitting at work and consumer demand rockets as everyone is home.

  • the teacher thread is v old, is anyone a teacher on here? i need help in order to help the kids on my estate with home schooling. i’m in SE london. please get in touch

  • Any recommendations for an online prince2 course that is half decent and gives me a certificate at the end? Seems like a mine field from looking around online.
