  • I like that

Yes, so do I. I'll offer them 600k and see what happens.

  • Haslemere

    Another +1.

Almost as good as Guildford from a commuting POV, but with fewer cunts from both ends of the social scale.

  • Brother who lived in Guildford used to complain constantly about the lack of seats on commuter trains into London. It's a lot of money each month to pay to stand up for 45 minutes. He might have just been traveling at peak peak trainwanker time though.

That was, of course, before the War of the Worlds type destruction of that part of suburbia.

  • Yeah no chance of a seat from Guildford. Even at Haslemere I'd say it's no better than 50/50 on any of the popular trains. I'm happy to have 15 minutes longer on the train to get a guaranteed seat every day (if I ever return to regularly commuting after all this).

  • When I was much younger I did the Woking to London in rush hour (hungover). Bit shorter than Guildford, but no seats and tube-like space. No idea about Haslemere in rush hour.

I'm sure that someone on here used to commute by bike to Guildford from East LDN?...although Haslemere would prob be pushing it, especially on the way home!

  • I commuted from bow to Croydon for a few months by bike and that wasn't a lot of fun I have to say. Does anyone fancy riding on the A3 from the elephant to Guildford ? Not sure I would.

  • I vaguely remember someone here (or yacf) who cycle commuted between East LDN/Guildford as they were working for CTC/CUK.

Not quite it but there's this thread from years ago: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/141376/

I think one thing that has been cemented by C19 is that I WFH. Going into London would be for meetings, or onward travel via Eurostar.

  • That would be Rosie, partner of @6pt

  • And @tricitybendix in her own right.

  • Extraordinary. I've made it back to 2017 so far.

  • I'm not sure quite how I arrived at this conclusion, but reading between the lines I think she may buy first class rail tickets.

  • You know, I think you're right. Although I'm mystified as to why she's still buying them, having complained that it's pointless to do so for about 4 years.

  • Single purpose twitter accounts based on raging at train companies are a guilty pleasure of mine. So much anger!

  • why she's still buying them

If she even buys them. It might just be fake rage as a standard class ticket holder annoyed that people with standard class tickets go an sit in 1st class when they shouldn't. There are many levels to this.

  • This was my favourite
Had to walk the full length of the train past empty seats to get to the next first class on the 16.25 Victoria to Ashford train

  • I mean, as my taste goes, that is utter sex wee. The terrazzo/stone floor to the hallway is quite simply aspirational. Unfortuantely, Maidstone has no redeeming features, I have family there I know. Friday nights down Frankie & Benny's and a quick snog in the carprk kind of Friday night.

  • Yeah we went down there having seen the above and came to a similar conclusion but could see some green shoots. It meets the criteria of train to Cov gdn and hour to Heathrow drive (I think).

  • Was chatting to a friend earlier who, in the alst 2 years, has moved to Folkestone. Quite a few in my industry have flocked there despite all working 2/3 days in London and spafing the best part of £5k on a season ticket to St. Pancras.

    Intruige got the better the me so had a quick look on Rightmove, crazy cheap for similar to what I have currently;

  • Oh its doable travel-wise, question is, do you want to do it? Getting the pissed-express last train home on a Thursday/Friday I'm sure would be quite the eye opener...

  • Friday nights down Frankie & Benny's and a quick snog in the carprk kind of Friday night

    top night out

  • Unfortuantely, Maidstone has no redeeming features

Maidstone and The Medway towns are all pretty miserable, yeah.
