  • @gretsch @Lucybee thank you both - think I'll try a little more watering. @Lucybee yours looks very happy!

  • Thanks! It is now.

Question for anyone - any idea how long seeds take to germinate? I planted some from vegetables and fruits I've been eating and dried out and so far nothing. Its day 3 now so aware it may take some time.
I've done peppers, tomatoes, cherries, raspberries, strawberries.

  • Really varies - from days to weeks. Mrs Nef planted loads of seeds, some stuff was up within a week, but the tomatoes took forever.
My chilli seeds seem to be doing fuck all, which is annoying as I'm impatient and I've already left it pretty late!

  • Some can take weeks, make sure you are keeping them warm. My chillies took 3 weeks.

  • My chillies took 3 weeks

    *sad impatient noises*

  • Copy that! Thanks!

  • Tomato seeds are quite fast usually. Put them in a small bottle of water in the sun and keep and eye on them. Germinate in a few days. Then plant them. Grow hella fast I’ve found

  • Great, thanks! I'll give it a go!

  • I just got back from a ride and the tomatoes have sprouted!

  • Ok bear with me, I know nothing about plants! I have these two palms(?), the bigger one has lots of brown dry leaves, but Some healthy looking green growth. The smaller one is pretty droopy and has these little white spots. Are they eggs?
What tlc should I be giving them both?

  • Repotted a couple bits as they’d outgrown the window planter, which I’ve now rearranged to give everything a bit more space.
Any idea what the two bigger ones are called?

  • Middle picture is a crassula ovata gollum.

  • Middle one is a jade plant variant isn't it?

  • thats awesome, must be the good vibes.

if you split them up now before the roots get tangled and hinder any future growth when you try to repot them, they will grow a lot better and faster.

also water them daily, they like soggy soil at this stage. might be why they took a little while to get going.

I've also found if you get a 2ltr water bottle, cut it in half and put potting soil plus a plant, water it, cover it up with the other half of the bottle and it will have its own little green house. doing this it will grow super fast. only just figured this one out but the bottled plants have been growing about 3x more than the others I've grown this year.

  • Brilliant! no idea how I hadn't thought of that! I've been sprouting my chillis on the windowstill like a schmuck.

  • Do you leave they lid on or off? Feels like they should need airflow of some sort but i have no idea if that is the case! Cheers

  • I'd probably leave the lid on but actually remove the upper half of the bottle a few times a week and expose the little plants to a bit of wind / draft, as this makes the stems stronger.
This really helps with chili plants I've found; with tomatoes, where you're going to tie them to a support of some sort anyways it probably doesn't matter really.

  • I’ve been leaving the lid on but I feel they would benefit from air. What I’ve been doing is giving the bottle a flick when the condensation builds up, so all the water runs down to the soil again, opening it up and blowing in there to give it c02 and clear out the oxygen. They feed off c02 after all so I guess it does them some good

Check out the photo, these were all planted at the same time. The bottle one is significantly larger

  • My chillies (and peppers) have been in for 2 weeks in a mini greenhouse on a sunny windowsill and done f all so far

  • Same. Moved the chillis to the airing cupboard.

  • Ok got it, will do this afternoon. Wow that's a great idea! It's own little greenhouse pod :)

    Thanks everyone!

  • the best chillies i've ever had were from the ones you get at wahaca when you pay your bill. i germinated them first in an old takeaway tupperware on a paper towel tucked away in the only warm place i could find - behind a mini fridge in my former office.

the year after me and my wife got ahead of ourselves and ordered a load of speciality varieties but they did naff all
