Maybe we should have a Lockdown Whittle Challenge like the Art Club / Weekly Photo challenge? Where we all whittle something to the criteria, then vote on our favourite. Winner gets to set the theme for the next week?

I'm borrowing a Mora 163, it is doing the job well. I briefly forgot it is sharp on both sides and attempted a push cut with my thumb on the measure blade... somehow avoided slicing it open thankfully.

I'd always thought it was just the seeds, as we had one at home and my parents told me not to eat the seeds, but a little research says all parts can contain cytisine. Still, after a bit of a trip down this particular rabbit hole, it seems that there are only significant concentrations in the seeds and bark, so I think they're probably OK. Also, it seems one needs to ingest a fair bit of the tree's tissues, so unless one gnaws regularly on a spoon, the risk seems very low.

The mora is a good and probably the cheapest hook knife you’ll get but it is dangerous!
I grind the side off that I’m not using.
Most are hand made and start at about £45 quid otherwise.

I just whittled this yesterday. It’s apple, lovely finish and very nice to work with.

I saw this thread and thought great idea. I’ve got some wood I chopped recently and plenty of time on my hands so had a go.

It’s so nice just sat in the sun chipping away. My attempt is a butter knife which I have tested and it butters good.

Only minor annoyance is that one side was nicely whittle away at. The other side the wood was very fibrey and stringy.

What sort of wood was it? Some of the conifers are like that, especially cupressus and similar. Sanding is the only way you’ll get a good finish.

It’s silver birch. You’re right sanding is the key. Patience isn’t something I have in abundance, but it’s a really nice process

Sometimes the wood twists and it’s awkward carving it straight

Knocked up a soap dish this week, I really enjoy whittling but other hobbies always get in the way, if anything the lockdown has given me the gift of time.

There's hook knives and gouges that can help shape things. Inspired to have a go at similar dish here, nice one @mustardbeak
