Came here to post that!
It was for 20 people but...

Indeed, but that's still ~£4k for a family of four that they probably won't ever get back.
Also they'll see just how many of their friends are really friends and whether they'll cough up for their share of the chalet or tell them to GTFO. (This assumes that they haven't got the money from the other people yet.)

You’d have insurance if you spent that amount of dosh wouldn’t you? It seems the chalet is open just no skiing.

Yes, that's the point. The chalet is saying they're open so no refund. The insurance company is saying they won't pay out becuase the chalet hasn't cancelled.
The fact that you can't actually get there is a separate matter, it's one of the problems of booking trips yourself instead of a package.
If it had been booked as a package holiday then there wouldn't be a problem with a refund or insurance claim.

Surprised this statement on FCO site for France give the necessary right to claim on insurance. After all it’s not essential travel. Reading again I wonder if they don’t have insurance as the travel company have advised them to claim and use the fco guidance as a reason.
COVID-19 Exceptional Travel Advisory Notice
As countries respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, including travel and border restrictions, the FCO advises British nationals against all but essential international travel. Any country or area may restrict travel without notice. If you live in the UK and are currently travelling abroad, you are strongly advised to return now, where and while there are still commercial routes available. Many airlines are suspending flights and many airports are closing, preventing flights from leaving.

I obviously don't know what policy they've got, but I'd be very surprised if it's not covered by their insurance, unless they only took their insurance out recently so the policy includes a blanket exemption for all Covid19-related claims. My annual policy covers all expenses incurred as a result of cancellation where the FCO advice in relation to the destination country is 'essential travel only' or worse, which at present is the FCO's advice for every foreign country.

I wonder if they haven’t got insurance or relied on their bank account insurance (or similar) mine for example is limited to £5000 for the insured person only per trip If the FCO advice is used as the reason. this is a last throw of the dice?

Possibly. More fool them, in that case. I think my annual multi-trip policy only cost about £60 for the year. I'm assuming that if they're spunking £17k on a ski chalet they'll be taking other foreign trips during the year.

The article I read somewhere else said they had insurance but the insurance would only cover their portion (not their friends) so it was more a story about how they're going to be dicked by their friends. (Their friends weren't covered as they hadn't paid for it yet and they didn't book it themselves.)
Let me see if I can find the article.

I made sure that I had good travel insurance after a fall on the bike generated an $8,000 bill in Colorado, mine is quite a bit more than £60, but apparently downhill mountain biking is a class 4 sport - the most dangerous that they'll insure. Who knew?

$8,000 isn't much to boast about when you're dealing with the US health care system. At most that'll get you a Strepsil and a cheeky wink from the nurse.

The standard of English on here is appalling, you can't even spell 'wank'.

That would be a lot more than $8k...

Can we get back to golf chat, please?

clairvoyant
is that some kind of posh, golf club-eqsue brand of lubricant?
-
• #671
Extra for a medium? Do I get money off for being a small?
-

I've seen your fans only page. You're not small.
