  • I have the computer power for Zwift now. But I hate their ads being every-fucking-where and that's enough to make me not bother.

  • Just tried Zwift for the first time this morning. Load of shit. Change my mind.

  • It's for all the wannabe racers that never pin on numbers. You actually pin on a number so it's probably pretty meh in comparison. Oh, I was supposed to change your mind? Um, you get to chat shit with people from all over the world, so I can shit talk my old roadie mates in Oz while smoking them right up until my laptop would crash trying to drive that shit.

  • Another 11W increase in FTP today.

Now I get to tear apart my whole TR training plan since none of the scheduled races will be happening.

  • hippy's how to race Zwift

    1. Set weight 30kg below actual weight
    2. Win
  • Set weight 30kg below actual weight

120kg will still see you at a disadvantage

  • Bam! Right in the kisser!

  • @hippy you walked right into that one.

  • 12W/kg FTP should be enough.

  • You're all just jealous.

  • Is the trainerroad ramp rest likely to overestimate FTP?

There's a really good TrainerRoad blog post from when they introduced this. I can't find it now. But the tl;dr was that it's kinda the opposite: the suffering, pacing and other issues associated with traditional 8/20 minute tests tend to underestimate your FTP as many (most?) get their pacing wrong or there are other issues.

They tested it with over 7000 people just in beta so I reckon it's probably fairly accurate.

  • I did back to back (ish) tests with 8min, 20min and Ramp and it was within 1W so it seemed reasonable to me. I've been using Ramp since as it's just neater, simpler and more likely repeatable.

I tried it for the second time recently and came to the same conclusion.

Although perhaps like @andyp I just find it all a bit too 'social'.

To be honest, I was trying it on an Android phone and at the time had no idea about the need for a separate (Zwift companion?) app, which is required to join group rides and navigate around the maps (as well as other features) so I might try it again. The need for 2 apps is a faff though and means I'll need to dig out the laptop for the main screen when I try it again...

  • Yeah, I remember reading that determining FTP by 95% of 20 mins should be more like 88-92% and everyone who uses the test is over-estimating. But the test subjects were elite riders who I reckon are a bit better at pacing than us mortals.

So as an unremarkable chopper, I would take the large TR test group of choppers as a comparison everyday.

  • It is sometimes said (on the TR forum) that Lamarck is a good way to know if your FTP is set correctly.

  • I finally found a good time to do this. Turns out riding 8 days straight beforehand wasn't great prep but can confirm it's doable, albeit much harder than expected and I crawled to 40 mins before crumbling into a shell of my former self.

Watts were within 1% of current threshold set by Ramp test. I reckon to do the whole hour I'd need to go 3-5% lower, which I'll try again after this next block.

  • I'm not missing my long commute. Finally strung together 4 weeks of sweet spot base medium volume Pt.II and now half way through Sustained power build medium volume. Am adding extra Zone 2 time on the off-days or at the end of rides, got a bit carried away on week 1 of Build.

  • Can you expand on this?

  • Not sure what you want me to expand on exactly but my calendar is open..

I'm following the Medium volume workouts, then adding volume with zone 2. I really didn't fancy the jump to a High Volume plan.

  • Sorry it was in response Lamarck comment. I was wondering how you’d judge it.

  • ah! It's 40 minutes at threshold in 60 minutes, if you barely finish the final set, you've got it dialled in. That's my experience anyway. This is mentally less taxing and more appealing than doing a straight hour.

edit: worth noting that it comes in week 5 of SSB, so not fresh. I wouldn't use it as a FTP test but it is pretty afirming.
