Cycling in the time of Corona

  • The simple fact is that people are spreading a virus if you don’t put certain limitations in place for a period of time.

Yes. Certain limitations have been put in place, and before the result of that really starts to be noticeable, it'll likely be another week. I support the limitations that have been put in place till now, but I don't blindly support making them ever stricter.

You’ll appreciate the fact of being able to go outside when you please (even with restrictions in place) a lot more when that possibility is taken away from you.

Yes, but that does not mean that I should 'feel lucky' that my freedom to go outside (at least to some extent) hasn't completely vanished quite yet.

  • While we are on the subject, if we were serious.

All motor vehicle transport should be banned for the duration.

People getting in their cars, cooking up a payload of whatever virons they are carrying and releasing them where everybody else is congregating.

    But cyclists..

  • How about “feel lucky” we change it into “be happy”?

  • People getting in their cars, cooking up a payload of whatever virons they are carrying and releasing them where everybody else is congregating.

Agree - especially people thinking that it's OK to drive somewhere to exercise or walk the dog.

  • how dare you? they are now free of any congestion charge and MOT (for 6 months).

  • More on topic by the way, my current setup to actually get some training done.

  • Nobody is banning necessary travel by bike. Not even close.

Unnecessary journeys by motor vehicle are discouraged. Cars are being stopped.

It is possible there will be a wider travel ban.

    if we were serious.

You sound less serious each post :)

  • Maybe, but even then I just don't think it's particularly helpful to weigh up how much your normal freedoms have been restricted yet. I won't tell Hungarians concerned about how their executive has just grabbed essentially absolutist power that they should either feel lucky or be happy that at least it's not quite as bad as China yet.

The fact such measures (as in the UK, decidedly not Hungary) are necessary is shit any way you look at it. Complaining about a very sudden rather large restriction on what you can and cannot do is a pretty normal human reaction, and I'd rather see that than everyone fall in line immediately with no issues whatsoever - that'd worry me a lot more.

  • This all sounds very NRA...

  • MOT: hadn't seen that, thanks.

  • @SwissChap

That very much depends on the reasoning behind it.

Sure enough it’s good to be skeptical about things but I think it’s fair to say that in this situation the so called greater good exceeds the personal desires some might have to continue doing what they’re doing.

This only makes sense if it is airborne, which we've been told it isn't (some debate beginning on this though)

If it is airborne, anything that requires you to breath heavily outside should also probably be banned - so that will be any exercise out of the house.

The question at the moment for my family- should we (2 adults, 1 four and 1 seven yr old) go for a walk round my local busy urban park, or drive 15 minutes to a deserted wood? Which do you think is more responsible in the current climate?

  • Yes, but as always it's a balance. It's normal to balance personal desires and freedoms vs the greater good in society, and with Coronavirus, the situation has changed drastically shifting the balance by quite a lot. That shouldn't be seen as a blank check to just do whatever though.

As I said (multiple times before), I am actually completely in favour of the current restrictions in place in the UK.

  • That bike is still so incredible.

  • The state of some posters on here.

If cyclists are riding the lanes in groups or gathering in central then use the law and prosecute the fuck out of them.

As if we should feel lucky, happy or anything that our society isn't more authoritarian and somehow it will be our fault if it becomes so.

Accepting this nonsense is a great way to get there faster.

  • Agreed, especially this:

If cyclists are riding the lanes in groups or gathering in central then use the law and prosecute the fuck out of them.

I don't think anyone here is justifying group rides or otherwise congregating in groups, nor have I seen anyone here say they've done that. Enforce the actual restrictions in place now instead of being angry at someone doing a solo 3h ride.

    It is mad isn't it?

  • Had had the same thought, its the same arguments for and against

  • I think that’s what @Howard is commenting on?

Yeah. I'm not sure where this "it's more airborne" thing is coming from, but if it is able to remain viable for long periods suspended in air, you'd need a better quality of breathing apparatus than the goofy facemasks that every man and his dog seem to have acquired over the last couple of days to have a fair chance of filtering it out.

I suspect what is driving the Austrian thing is more about limiting transmission through droplets on to surfaces that are hard to clean or receive no cleaning, i.e. packets of food on a shelf.

  • Ooo, full bike shots please...maybe somewhere else away from this shouty and rather boringly circular thread?

Edit: found them through LFGSS stalking. Everyone back to discussing.

  • Can everyone stop equating cautious public health measures with authoritarianism please?

Maybe we should bring back lead-based paint, smoking indoors, and thalidomide for pregnant ladies as well? Hands off my asbestos, Kim Jong Johnson

  • OK, I have had a whole load of viewers question my choice of attire, so I thought I should step up to the mark with some Spesh shoes (thanks @Dammit) a Rapha jersey (thanks @musa) and a Fiat hat (thanks @Skülly) for a quick reminder of turbo techniques.

Note the hand stretched out at the feed station, ready to intercept the jasmine tea from support crew (Mrs Ludd)
