As Andrew Rawnsley pointed out in the Observer on Sunday, polls always reflect well on a government during the time of crisis. Gordon Brown had a huge boost in popularity (from a low base) during the 2008 financial crisis. That boost soon ebbs away as normality returns, especially if the government are seen to have handled things badly.
This stuff is something that should be stockpiled sky high. It's not exactly expensive (in the scale).
I really hope the government are held accountable for their failures. There must be an independent enquiry and consequences.
