  • Stupid or incompetent, pick one.

  • Both

  • 3 - wilfully self-interested

Coronavirus: Mexicans demand crackdown on Americans crossing the border

  • they should build a wall

  • Could get America to pay for it

  • Oh, wait a minute

  • The emergency timetable for the Tube is due to be implemented on Sunday 5th April. No details yet ,but I'm guessing it's going to be a reduced service for the foreseeable .

  • Urgh, cringe

    It’s typical Facebook fucking drivel.

This is from a member of my cycling club last night who is currently working in an Intensive Care Unit:

Currently at work finishing what I can only describe as one of the most stressful shifts of my life. Was sent some videos of my street clapping. I’m pretty emotionally wrought right now but this was very uplifting. It brought tears to the whole intensive care team at handover this evening. Thank you for the support.

  • Maybe we just leave the "I like clapping" and the "I don't like clapping" debate be?

Sorry, that was @ing you but it was meant to be a more general request.

  • Our nurse and radiologist neighbours were overwhelmed and appreciative too last night.

I was a cynic about the gesture but it turned out to be spot on.

  • All forum users should find Keith Bingham's blog interesting, but the latest post on it by Peter Whitfield is essential reading now.

I'm not sure I entirely agree with Peter because I fear he is putting too much faith in statistics which may prove to be absolutely worthless. Having said that I still believe this is a clear and valuable analysis.

  • Yeah sorry I'm just catching up on the thread, didn't mean to reignite.

Generally speaking I think cynicism is healthy and it's a very fair point about the hypocrisy of clapping if you voted Tory and facilitated austerity and huge cuts to the NHS. There was a great turnout on our street but being in deepest Hackney Tories are like hen's teeth.

  • Only skimmed it but

Publicly available statistics tell us that in Italy over the last five
years, flu deaths have been running at 17,000 per year, say in round
    terms, 1400 per month.

    and

First, that if the Coronavirus is here for some time, and if it
continues to cause around 10,000 or 12,000 deaths per year, the total
death toll would rise by that amount. Yet the extra deaths would still
be lower than the “normal” flu deaths with which we have been living
    for many years.

Quick google tells me Italy has had about 8200 corona related deaths so far, and that's in a just few weeks. Highly doubt it'll stop at 12000 or 17000.

I get his point, that people die of the flu and other "avoidable" causes every year, but the current spike we have is still something out of the ordinary

  • These 'oh but the flu kills more' people remind me of militant atheists and their utter inability to connect their oh-so-wondrous thoughts with the physical reality the rest of us experience.

    Depends on their attribution.

  • Sorry if this has already been discussed elsewhere (and if so please point me in the right direction) but can anyone explain why the number of deaths in the U.S. is so low in relation to case numbers?

It doesn't seem like they exactly have it under control...

  • Of course. To me this seems a bit like the chicken vs egg conundrum. If you have an underlying issue but it's a flu that takes you round the corner, how do you attribute it?

  • It's not "just" deaths either though. It would break all the health services if it was left unchecked.

  • Depends on their attribution

  • Attribution?

  • If you are balls deep in a state clamp down you absolutely attribute it to the cause of the clamp down.

US figures will be like Japan’s I suspect when scaled for population size.

  • Pretty much share his view

  • "Dilwyn the dog ate my EU emails" :)

No worries, those Dyson ventilators will be done and tested in 2022, come in a nice silver/purple too. Hopefully they don't just get hammered but do a U-turn.

  • All the "militant" atheists on my Facebook are reminding everyone that science is more useful than prayer in this case (well they would, heh)

And that, yes, it IS more dangerous than the flu. And that people should wash their hands. And are somewhat despairing about huge prayer gatherings where people can make each other ill...
