Half my family were cops in NI, and friends joined the army. Yes, they had dangerous, difficult jobs (my brother and uncle both had to leave their homes immediately as the IRA had found out their addresses), but they were open - and boastful - about the fact that they were corrupt, dishonest and brutal. I recall their outrage when bodycams were brought in as it hindered the delivery of beatings. Floating the idea that the law should apply to them too was seen as being on the side of the terrorists.
