Thanks for the feedback @Dammit @Dogs, decided not to purchase anything and turns out I didn't need to.
Got home yesterday afternoon, both cats were again hiding under the sofa. After a couple hours working quietly in the same room, Mum came out and after a couple more hours was relaxed enough to settle and snooze in the open. For the first time she was happy for me to approach and as soon as I started petting, she relaxed further, started purring and her son came out to join in!
