  • Fairly set. I'm only using the bike for commuting/around town bits at the moment, but when the weather clears up I'm keen to take it out to the countryside for proper mtb duty.
Also, I bought the bike second hand, so the pads and rotors had worn unevenly which is why the pistons are all unevenly bedded in, and i don't think I was bothered to reset the pistons when I bled them.
It's a valid point though, it'd be cheaper as well...

  • buy some brand new Shimano hydraulics

I would only consider going down this route if you're prepared to tolerate brakes which work straight out of the box, keep working just the same until you wear the pads down to the backing plates, then work like new when you replace the pads, without bleeding or any other maintenance, for about 20 years.

  • Sounds awful and totally unbearable. Think i might have to try it.

Is that true for all Shimano brakes, or only a few models? Had my eye on the XT M8000 model.

  • I’m not a MTBer but aren’t the XT model the only with issues or was that the previous generation?

  • Is that true for all Shimano brakes, or only a few models?

I expect they're all fine, my review is based on XT M755

  • What were the issues?

  • Okay, thank you - I'll do a bit of googling.

  • Just had a quick google myself. There are issues with the m8000. Here is a review but keep googling and you’ll find more. Saying this, there must be tens of thousands of content users out there. It did put me off when I was building up a recumbent though.

  • Just buy some MT200

  • Interesting read and certainly worth considering. Though somewhat refreshing that the issue seemed to be isolated to an early production batch...? I guess it's luck of the draw in that respect, there's no way of knowing what you'll get.

I'm not sure it's enough to put me off given the current price on CRC and 300+ reviews giving it an average of 4.5 stars or so. Also, I'm hoping, and assuming, that CRC will have the most recent batch given how much product they shift. Though that's an assumption on my part and not based on anything other than the notion CRC sells tons of stuff....

  • These are cheap as chips, RRP £19.99 heck it's so cheap that it'll cost you more to bleed a brake at your local bike shop!

Works well, it's a non series based on older Deore/Alivio/Acera running BS01 pads.

  • Perfect... nice work.
Gloss black and silver goes so well with the clearcoat.

  • Is that the 853 lemond frame that's been hanging up in Clever Mike's for a while? I am pretty sure he said it was clear coated when I asked about it. It's definitely been a slow burner build if it is! Looking good though, always thought the frame looked nice.

  • They come oem on a whole load of ebikes - and seem to be just as good as my deores.

    Mad cheap.

  • Do you know why they are for use with resin pads only?

  • Heat build up IIRC.

  • Basic stuff, non series based on older Deore (pre M615)/Alivio/Acera so it's not meant to take much abuse.

Don't quote me on these but I think it has got something to do with the piston and seal on the calipers.

  • Don't trust ebikes, I've seen some which apparently can go up to 50 kph with v brakes. Ok if you know what you are doing but to the average users who gets it out of the box and trying to set the brakes themselves? Oh Lord...

Seen more than a few, warning stickers, axle and RD protectors etc still on and they come in to replace some missing bolts on their mudguard ...

Told them their bikes are unsafe as it's not been checked (brake pads? Don't even get me started...) and their response? Yeah you can do it now, it'll take 5 minutes right and a tenner? FML...

  • Bodged e bike conversions? With 'disc brake' and dodgy 'suspension' forks? Now that's something I won't even touch...

The pity is that it's the sellers who are misrepresenting their products to buyers who don't have a clue. Loads of those who are food deliveries rider.

We try to make it as safe as possible whenever a bike comes in, even when it is not a willing payer (yup...), heck we've given brand new tyres away just to make sure they are safe and don't keep coming back every week with punctures or ripped sidewalls!

  • I just meant I’ve encountered MT200s a lot on ebikes I’ve sold and they work well, no issues (no more so than any other shimano brake - occasional leaky caliper)

50kph with v brakes sounds like shit ebikes, not my area of expertise tbf.

  • Ebikes are not my forte hence my reluctance to comment.

Put it this way, you have pretty much instant boost when you pedal and then you brake, instant boost when you pedal and then brake again, start, stop and repeat which I don't think a basic brake set would work, this is more of XT if not if you must on the most basic, SLX ...

  • Period after Christmas was fun, parents dragging in their half built bikes with threaded bolts, nuts and pedals and asking us to make it safe for a tenner and in 10 minutes, I.KID.YOU.NOT!

  • Not a rant... ;)

  • They’re are a lot of legit, legal ebikes powered by bosch, shimano and Yamaha BB motors. They’re generally limited to around 16mph, pedal assist, most come with discs, some with Maguras.

They’re amazingly clever and super safe, you should try and get a ride on one.

Cheap hub motor ebikes and amazon e conversion kits are generally pretty sketchy.
