  • 1 is your common return, 2 is L1 3 is L2

    (edit. not an electrician though..)

  • Wonder if you could use architectural copper sheet, the stuff on a roll.

We have a copper work surface and splashbacks. You can't use the stuff on a roll, you need flat sheets. Our Polish builder imported the sheets himself from Poland in his van as it was cheaper than buying it here.

It looks great and it's super practical too (naturally antimicrobial) but I wouldn't have done it myself because I think it would look shit. It was expensive and had to be glued to the ply with a special glue because most glue doesn't work on copper. @TooTallTim may have better DIY skills than me.

I think brass is less fussy about glues.

  • https://basiccopper.com/thicknessguide.html, seem to disagree.

This is from the link as I was thinking about copper splashback would be easier/cheaper than brass to work.

22 Mil/16 Ounce Copper (.0216") 24 gauge: 16 ounce copper sheeting is a heavy weight copper often referred to as "roofing copper" or "roofing flashing." It weighs approximately 1 pound per square foot. It's often used for roofing and flashing, various art and craft projects, DIY projects such as copper backsplashes, copper countertops and copper range hoods, electrical applications, research and development and much more. 16 ounce copper can be bent and formed by hand but is very durable. Metals snips are needed to cut this thickness. (Also check our patina copper sheetsfor a variety of uses including bartops and countertops. It is also used for for various wall hangings and artwork.) See a video thickness guide of 22 mil below.

  • Hi guys,
I have noisy chair legs on a wooden floor.
I bought some felt pads a couple of times but they all fall off after a while (I blame the kids for dragging the chairs).
Is there another option that anyone here has tried?
The legs are too small for me to drill into the ends. I was thinking something like no-more-nails and rubber pads or something.

  • Have you tried the ikea chair pads, maybe attached with a little hot glue if it comes off?

  • Get thin felt or cork and attach it with contact adhesive that stuff will give a much stronger bond than the double sided tape used on the ready made pads but needs to be used in a well ventilated space.

  • Hi,
Yes I tried Ikea ones, but they came off too. I tried putting them back on with No More Nails.

  • Good shout, I'll give it a try. Thanks.

  • What kind of wall fixing should be used for this picture frame fitting? A standard hook doesn't seem like a good fit

  • Looks like just about anything will work as long as there is something to stop it slipping off the end.

  • I'm not saying it's not physical possible, but if it started out in a roll I reckon it will look shit as a worktop or splashback.

  • What shape are the legs, round or squared? If round you could potentially use rubber cane tips over them.

  • You can get little clear plastic feet on ebay

  • I thought it looked like it was made for something specific. Picture hook was awkward fit. Might just buy some hanging wire instead.

  • Looks like a sawtooth hanger. I’f just hang it off a screw - a pan head for extra security if possible.

L hook or wall hook would also work.

  • Picture pin or any nail with a decent head, so the picture doesn't jump off.

The 5 detents allow you to adjust the position for leveling.

  • I see! Cheers guys, emergency ended.

  • This bad boy of a shitty valve, which controls the filler loop on my boiler, is leaking so I’m going to replace it.

All the valves I can find at screw fix etc are double compression fittings. The bottom of this one is obvs a standard compression fitting, but is the top just the same but The flexi hose just screws on, or do I need something special do you think?

  • It’ll dent if you drop something on it, even when glued to ply or MDF. As Fox says, getting a roll to sit flat, unroll without creasing or bending and not look shit when DIYed is not something I would try. I have many years experience of sheet metalworking.

AFAIK brass is chemically very similar to copper, just a bit more of whatever makes it pink. Call Redwood Innovations and ask them what to use, they’re great and give adhesive advice for free. They’ll sell you a white label version of most expensive fancy glues.

  • What ever thickness of copper will dent as it is soft. Have installed rolled roofing copper on a roof before and it does unroll nicely, like a paper poster. Just took our time and were steady. The old copper had been stolen and hence needed replacement.

Can get copper or brass coloured stainless.

  • Oh great hive mind. A question about boiler condensate pipes if I may.

Our condensate pipe currently runs down the outside wall from our 2nd floor flat. For reasons not worth explaining here, we have to remove the pipe.

On the face of it, its a simple job. The boiler is in the bathroom so there are several options for sending the condensate elsewhere.

I'm pretty handy at basic plumbing so more than able to do the grunt work, but I have no idea whether condensate draining is something covered by gas safety regulations.

I suppose what I'm asking in a roundabout way, is whether I can just move the pipe to drain into a waste pipe internally myself or whether its actually something that could be dangerous and I should get a plumber to do it.

  • Think I might have answered my own question.

  • Thanks to your advice decided to replace the whole filling loop instead of just the valve, and just as well because the non return valve on the old one was at fault. All working good now and no leaks so far...
