we need figures. hard facts. research.
maybe the stress is also making people shit more, or possibly the canned fruit. People that haven't touched a prune in decades suddenly getting caught short.
Do Fray Bentos sales also go up? Is there a correlation?

Except not those figures and facts you disagree with.
I’d read that toilet roll is to due to shelf space and it’s more visibly depleted and therefor enters a panic cycle.
Tobasco will be well down the line...

5 big pack of rolls vs. 40 small cans.

We buy packs of 24 bog rolls just because it’s cheaper.

Everyone knows that the 3 basic essentials of UK living are bread, milk and toilet rolls. Everyone over 60 has at least one loaf and 4 pints of milk in their freezer at any time, so there's a countrywide reserve there for times of crisis. Toilet rolls do not thaw well, hence the panic buying.

40 small cans of what?
I mean, I'd buy 40 small cans of beer rather than 5 big pack of rolls. But I'd buy 5 big pack of rolls of £50 notes rather than 40 small cans of mushrooms.
Or have I missed something? -

I've still got my No Deal stockpile cupboard. When the apocalypse comes my packs of olives, sun-dried tomatoes and tofu will be worth their weight in gold

What are you - some sort of frenchman?
Finnish actually, although married to a Frenchwoman. The thing is, growing up, squat toilets were associated with filthy Russian holes in the ground. The SOAS ones were the first ones I had come across any in western Europe and properly cleaned and flushed to boot.
The ones in France tend to be rank as well.

Anecdotally, in Streatham Sainsbury's there were empty shelves of pasta, rice, tinned pulses, tuna etc, but Spam and Fray Bentos were comfortably riding the storm with fulsome availability.
(They were in the war, you know. Seen it all before. And powdered eggs. Bananas hadn't been invented. etc...) -

powdered eggs
A hugely underrated emergency food. Lasts forever and tastes pretty good.

Patience, I'm waiting for them to become de rigueur in the home owners thread before I drop that humble brag.

Just because of the common ground with the other thread derail topic going on here, I´ll add that the only ways to properly clean one´s undercarriage is by way of the Finnish arse shower (hangs on the wall betwixt toilet and sink) or the bidet. Who the fuck wants to spread one´s faeces about with a bit of flattened dead tree carcass? Disgusting.

B...but. If the shelves were empty how do you know this?!? [tinfoil_hat.jpg]

Genuine question -
I've booked flights to the states in around 4 weeks time, with an airline who have said they may be in a bit of trouble;
Can I take out insurance against this? I didn't book on a CC and only booked flights - which I think means I'm not ATOL protected.
