My grandad was killed at Ypres. He wasn't in the army, he was camping in the field next door and went over to complain about the noise.

My grandad was at Ypres (Passchendaele) in a pioneer battalion and survived but was gassed...told me he saw a mule drown in the mud...He didn't get Spanish Flu either.

In English public toilets around 1919 the soap was often fixed on a spike on the wall cos so many men had lost an arm in battle.
