  • I do, but I want to get it and see what it has that’s serviceable first

Will be more RSF than LFGSS though I would think

It’s currently being bled on by @cagimaha on a a packed train somewhere near Harrogate, so may need quarantined for a while first

  • I prefer the term self powered mover.

  • Great to see another one rescued! Subbed, looking forward to seeing this evolve. That is 4 of us that i know of now that have 87 couriers on here, it would almost be worth a meet up and ride out, if we weren't all so spread out. . .

  • I dont know until I see it (Hopefully tm, much excite), but this might be an '86.

It seems to have a mix of what was on both models. The evidence for '87 is strong though as it was sold with the step through version and probably (bought new with it), which came out in '87 I think.

That is now another forum bike as well, so technically there are 5 of us.

For this one I wont do to much initially apart from get it working for a lake district trip in June. We'll see though......

  • Oh, where did you get your bullmoose bars btw? i am keen to try a set

  • I'm pretty sure that is an '87. It has the look of an '86 from the bars, but I think it's an 87 because: the bottle cage bosses are further down the down tube, it has 87 correct parts (stem, 983 cantis, logo'd hubs). The shifters are 86 spec suntour LD4700s but they are good. The bar is not original as the riser on an '86 is 22.2mm clamp dia. Your stem means the bar is aftermarket ('86 models had a 4 bolt faceplate bmx like Win stem).
Does it have paw print pantographs at the top of the seat stays? They appeared on 87 frames.

You can get repro Bullmoose bars from PX, I think there are two types. Be aware new ones dont have cable stops. They sometimes come up on eBay, I had a saved search on eBay for a couple of years, and specifically wanted an original 80s Nitto one, and didnt think twice when one did come up. There are a couple for sale in the states at the mo if you could stomach that?

Ps think you're right 're mixte option, but even they had differences to the regular bikes. My old dear had one from new also but sadly sold it some 10 years ago.

  • My gut is that’s it’s and 87, just an early one. As you say the shifters and the risers where what did me, but I could see that the Stem wasn’t right!

Hopefully I’ll get it tomorrow evening (it’s just in quarantine in Brockley at the moment) and it will get a full going over in the pub post hills.

It’s got some ‘upgrades’ on it. An XT rear mech, which is an upgrade, so 8 speed is an option (are these hubs freewheel, I assume they are?) and a new chain set, which looks interesting.

Keen for a bullmoose and have the eBay search going, just wondered if you had found a stash somewhere.

    More to follow tomorrow

  • Frame width will be your limiting factor for gearing, they are 126mm wide. You can still find good wide range freewheels ie 13-30, or the other option is to fit a shimano Uniglide rear hub with a 7 UG cassette. You could then index a shimano system. Suntour spacing is different again (and there are 3 sub variants) so you'd need the matching shifters and mech for freewheel. The xt mech you have will obviously be friction at the mo, can't see how you could index it other than go UG. I actually have a NOS DX MT63 126mm solid axle hub that you can have for £20 if you wanted to go down that path? I can't see how 8s would work unless you cold set the frame to 130mm and fitted a Hyperglide road hub.

  • This reminds me of the nightmare I'm trying to sus for my '82 Bridgestone Eurasia.

Currently got a 50-42, 13-24 setup which is a bit too big for me. Looking at fitting a NOS Campag Rally RD and Suntour New Winner freehub that I came across. Only issue is trying to figure if if I should run it as 7sp, or take apart the freehub and remove one of the sprokets. It appears it has the flexibility to run as 6 or 7sp.

  • I’ll just bang an 8 speed freewheel on it

I’ve done that loads of times with old 126mm rear ends. I’ve had ten speed in some quite happily tbh.

Not bothered about range to much as it’s a triple up front. Same with indexing, it’s basically just lazy gear shifting. Far more satisfying learning to play the friction shifter trombone.

Me and my hammer tend not to over think things, so we’ll see where we get to, if it stays 7 speed, all good. Then I’ll just save for Etap and disc tabs...

  • Just get a wider range freewheel? I might even have one in the parts bin, 6 speed?

Or better just get better legs?

  • I've got a box of NOS freewheels that could be used.

The New Winner was interesting to me as I'd never heard of a freewheel which can be run 5,6, or 7 speed.

Definitely don't have the legs. I struggle to get up some of the hills around here in a 34-28!

  • There is a lot of good info online ref suntour freewheel spacing, assuming that is what you have? I thought New Winner 6 and ultra 7 used the same body, therefore spacer size reduced to get the 7th cog on? If so removing one won't work, you need to re-space to 6s (non ultra).

What spare freewheels do you have?

  • Would that be a Pandrol point clip hammer?! I think these tough old couriers would fare well still if you were to slip . . .

  • Yeah that does sound interesting, I’m going to check all of my Suntour freewheels now!

  • LoL

    The joys of the CD500.

I prefer my Railway hammers more, multi use...

  • Havn't seen one of them, but then I probably wouldn't unless it had BR(W) or GWR inscribed.

  • Well GWR has a proud history of doing its own thing, so go knows whats out there stamped up in terms of multi-tool hammers!

  • Railway Touring Club thread >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

  • It’s an 87

Confirmed by Paw prints on the seat stay

    Kit list is as follows

    • Orginal wheels with MF/Sansin hubs and Araya rims (which are nice and wide)
    • Spez 1.95 tanwalls, which much come up ok. They also might crumble when removed...
    • original Dia Compe levers ans Canti’s
    • Suntour ratcheted thumbies, which are really cool
    • Non OG stem, which has the original owners post code engraved on it...
    • Sukikusk (thats what it says...) risers
    • Original cabling
    • Deore XT rear mech and 6 speed shimano freewheel
    • Original saddle, seat post and quick release. Which will all come up nicely I think
    • Suntour CX 5000 front mech, which has seen a few wars
    • Pressed on Chaingang below bogstandard triple cranks
    • Remains of front and rear guards, the rear light be original and is called a ‘POKER’.
    • Quite a nice rack
    • Mori Epoch HS, which seems solid and has a great name

Frame is in great condition and despite a few scrapes it’s lovely. Paint is still very pearlescent as well

Happy, now I have to clean it up and get it serviced, but only have one night a week to do it in London and I’m at home en Ecosse next week.

So it will be a slow burner. But it will be ready for June

  • I mean. The rust must be some sort of post purcurchase canti brake enhancement.

  • Rust and ‘innovation’

  • Presume the plan for this is to douse it in petrol then set it on fire?
