  • Alas not. This was just a town centre bar (a Revs of all things) where the bouncers ID everyone on entry, photo ID in a machine that keeps a temporary copy of it and checks if you're on a banned list. Similar to the US bars that ask everyone for ID just so they don't offend people by not asking.

I haven't been asked for ID other than that for a good 20 years. Lunch time drinking at 6th form was The Flying Pig.

  • Revs of all things

This is the worst part of the whole story

  • Everyone's been to a Revs. Everyone.

  • Yeah, when I was 18

  • Being ID’d regardless of age is okay with me - it helps with the ‘banned from one banned from all’ agreement to try keep out the worst offenders. I’ve had my ID scanned in a number of places back when I still had a social life.

As much as I’m against Big Brother per se, I’m all for a club or bar having ID and facial recognition of anyone and everyone who might ruin my night.

  • Oh. A cocktail bar.

    Say no more.

  • I had to Google it.

  • As much as I’m against Big Brother per se, I’m all for a club or bar having ID and facial recognition of anyone and everyone who might ruin my night.

I understand that on a local level but what is the difference between a bar having face recognition and nationwide Police face recognition?

It is, to be fair, the thin edge of the wedge.

  • I was at a Jerry Lee Lewis gig in Memphis back in the 2000s, I was 38 but unable to buy a drink because I didn't have a driving licence... They wouldn't accept my passport as ID... My friends had to buy me drinks all night, it was ace...

We have the photo ID thing in Oz now, I think it's a good thing if it keeps the meat heads out...

  • Exactly. It’s the grey.

    The difference is the implementation.

As a victim of assault (in the middle of the day, in a public space) where neither the half dozen cctv cameras, witnesses, security guards knowing and naming the kids, nor police did fuck all to get a resolution, I struggle with these topics. You can have my face in a database but if that information system has poor integration or is badly managed, it’s useless.

Most face-rec nonsense is about selling our habits, and data, to sell us more shit. National security is a joke. The most successfully implemented human-tracking is for the perpetuation of capitalism, not for security.

We’re unlikely to reach a police state, but very likely to reach high levels of control through coercive ‘retail’ strategy.

  • The Met are a RSA, this I cannot condone.

  • I need a new wallet. My freitag has seen much better days. It’s my 2nd and they’ve both lasted 5years+ before starting to look shabby but fancy a change. I’m probably too old for a Velcro wallet anyway now.
Carry up to 10 cards plus coins, no leather.

    Any suggestions?

  • I got a cork wallet a few years ago that I'm very happy with. I'd love to give the company a plug, but I can't for the life of me remember what they're called; they were at VegFest a few years ago. They're not the first couple of links that come up when I search. To their credit, their name doesn't seem to be anywhere on it, which in this instance I find annoying. Somewhat predictably, when I look for 'exhibitors VegFest cork wallets', I get Cork VegFest ...

A friend of mine always makes her wallets out of used drinks cartons ...

  • I found that a bar insisting on scanning your ID before you go in is a useful way to identify the bars that you don't want to go to.

  • One's a private property so they can do what they like.

Surely banned persons will just wear New Romantics-style makeup to get around the facial recognition?

  • dazzle ships faces

  • There's a lot of interesting research out there on how to hack visual recognition systems using precisely targeted adversarial attacks. Very theoretical in some respects but there are examples of transparent overlays onto traffic signs that cause self-driving vehicles to misclassify the sign: i.e. stop signs are seen as yield signs.

That being said, dazzle face camo should be hugely effective for quite some time.

  • Lost all my notes from uni, had a list of stuff to recommend. Dammit.

  • Pocket dump:
Card holder (credit, debit, drivers license, donor card)
    G Shock
    Battered space pen
    Comb/ bottle opener
    Swiss army knife

  • What the fuck did you do to your Space Pen to get it like that?!? I've had my black one for fucking years and it still looks brand new, doesn't live in my pocket tho'... But maybe it should? 🤔

I keep it in my Topo bag inside my Canopy Brewery tote, which is my work bag these days... How things have changed...

  • It actually fell out of my pocket into a car park and got driven over for a few days.
Had to bend it back into shape with pliers.
Might replace with a non battered version one day

  • Olight have a charity sale on at midnight, couple of mini batons with 30% off - 100% of proceeds go towards PPE for NHS workers
