  • Have come across some carbon aero seatposts (vgc) when clearing out. Any way of knowing (as they're not branded) what they'll be compatible with? Are there a limited of aero standards?

Two larger ones are the same profile and c.152mm with a smaller one 125mm

  • Have come across some carbon aero seatposts

    Each to their own.

  • Ok so this tickled me, a lot :-)

  • Ok so this tickled me, a lot

    Whatever floats your boat.

  • Are there a limited of aero standards?

Yes, and that limit is zero. No standards. Some nominal copies, due to the way open mould frames get multiple brands.

  • Or even 'bloats my float'. In 'all seriousness', given my current 'dry spell' the aero seatposts are looking somewhat desirable!

  • Ok mate, thanks. A cpl friends have them and one very much looks like it's from a Planet X Stealth which I can test - cheers

  • Careful of the carbon grip paste.

  • Should I sell my Kona Dr dew with 3x9 gearing, disc brakes and guards and instead buy an eighties Rockhopper single speed/fixed with an extra set of studded tires (I live in Sweden)? This will be used for a 10k commute and mowing kids around in a child seat. I'm worried that this is some kind of pre 40-crisis, i.e. substituting something practical for something shiny and more on trend.

  • i would never do this move, that rockhopper has nothing special or am i blind?

  • I mean yeah if you want to trade in your Kona for what will be more of a beater and have some cash left over?
    It’s cheap right- The specialized?

  • No it's actually about 40 gbp more than what I paid for the Dew. Reading your response it's obviously clear that I have a retrophilia problem.
    Thanks!

  • if the rockhopper is something you have wanted since the eighties and now you can realise that dream, then why would you not do it?

  • Why would anyone want a rockhopper?

    Stumpy maybe.

  • Not quite an eBay shenanigans hence post here.
    Very simple (I think).
Someone bought some wheels from me (were brand new in box). Messaged a cpl weeks later saying that they were faulty (uneven bearings?) and though there was no play in freehub the cassette rocked when he was trying to set up and that the gears couldn't be set up properly.
He maintained he was a mechanical whizz and was doing everything right (he was setting up 9sp on 11sp hub so I enquired about spacer etc). Anyway, in good faith, I asked him to return and I'd refund if faulty. He returned (now a not fresh pair of wheels with spacer/leaflets, albeit not obviously used although a little marking on rim from trying to set up) and lo and behold they're completely sound and 90 seconds was all it took for my LBS to confirm they're absolutely sound when I went for a second opinion. He paid goods/services so can get his return postage back and I've offered to refund the cost of wheels (less my postage) which I think is perfectly reasonable - or, at my expense, re-send to him. Anyway, a few days have passed and nothing back from him! Shall I just refund his money less my postage cost and forget about it? I take it if he involves PayPal they'll see I've already refunded him?

  • is there any reason why generic garmin stem bolt mounts, such as these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bike-Stem-Extension-Mount-Holder-Bracket-Adapt-For-GARMIN-GPS-GoPro-Cateye-light/202675579365?hash=item2f3067e9e5:g:yE4AAOSwzaVc2r4K are a bad idea? I'm thinking they might have an effect on the clamping load of a stem, but if they don't then I'd buy one

  • I'm thinking they might have an effect on the clamping load of a stem

Technically, they don't affect the static clamping load, but they do reduce the stiffness of the clamp. Since the longer bolts strain more in absolute terms under a given service stress, the amount the clamp opens up under stress is increased. The generic nature means there's a lot of wasted material for the purposes of range-taking, so they don't end up looking any better than the kind which clamps around the bar. You're also stuck with having the garmin pitched up or down at whatever angle your bolts are at.

  • How does unlocking a phone off a network work?

In the past I've bought a code off eBay. But what actually happens?

    Cheers.

  • what's the best value for 1x11 mtb hydro groupsets?

  • Shimano Deore brakes and SLX transmission.

  • How does unlocking a phone off a network work?

In the past I've bought a code off eBay. But what actually happens?

At a guess network locking is at a firmware level and the phone runs a bit of code that requests the firmware remove the lock, at which point the code is required, and the O/S or whatever supplies the code and the firmware updates itself to the unlocked state should the code match whatever algorithm the firmware uses to identify valid codes.

  • I need to send some documents to Dublin (about a dozen sheets of A4). They're not valuable but I want to ensure that they're delivered.

Is Royal Mail the easiest for this or should I be looking elsewhere?

  • Royal mail - pay for signed for (insured to £50) for about 2.50 tops as they'll be large letter I think
    Edit:
If under 5mm will be standard letter and under £2 signed for
    Edit again!!! Dublin!
Still royal mail - always find their prices competitive (sometimes the lowest) with small items (ie letter/small parcels) when sending abroad, it's when you start getting to 2+kg their prices rocket
