Or just a complete lack of reflection on the topic. I recently saw some American on reddit ask why the English have such an accent when he himself just speaks normally... yeah, he wasn't joking.

That’s really common
Essentially Americans shriek through their noses. Its not necessarily a bad thing, some are quite good at it.
