I think a lot of the perceived slugglishness of 40mm+ tyres is the inertia in accelerating - if you try stand up and push a load of that effort goes straight into the give in the tyres. Once up to speed they're great though.
Yes, minor inconvenience when youre riding far I guess.
Moreso with 700c,
It take a noticeable amount of effort to ride on 700c 64mm tyres.
