  • Damn, thanks for confirming.

  • This looks like the exact product I need. £90. Ouch. https://www.bikeinn.com/bike/sram-red-110-bcd/136338480/p

  • Errr no, was running it 10 speed (must have to read correctly next time, my bad)! Is there a noticeable difference in chain width between 10 and 11 speed making the use of 10sp chainring with 11sp chain impossible?
EDIT: https://weightweenies.starbike.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=135901 , considering Sram price, worth a try maybe?

  • I've got a 11sp Force 50T unused. Has the hidden bolt though, so not sure of compatibility.

  • My Google Fu is not working today (struggling to see wood for trees).
What adapters to I need to convert my fulcrum db5 C17 (2017/18 model I think) from 100x12 142/12 thru axle to standard QR? Cheers

  • On closer inspection, the cassette is (also) the culprit. Given my riding - flat, never change front chainring and only use a narrow range at the rear, this would explain a lot.

As the cassette is on Prime, I’ll see if that helps the issue.

  • So I’m currently unemployed and have been contemplating bicycle couriering to fill the days. Has anyone of experience got companies to recommend and or general advice!

After 15years of retail I’ve decided I want to earn money doing something I enjoy and this could fill a gap whilst I’m working out what that is!

  • Looks a bit worn but I doubt it would cause the chain to skip, some of the teeth are supposed to be profiled to aid shifting.

  • Would the chainring be more of a likely culprit? Whatever the cause is, the slipping is happening at the cassette/ rear DR.

To clarify, it’s not skipping, rather it is slipping/jolting forward, as if the chain has slid over a tooth or the rear hub has rotated, happening when I’m applying a sudden peak in power/get out of saddle. I’ve had something similar happen when the cassette lock ring hasn’t been tightened enough, although that’s not what’s happened here.

  • Maybe you’re right. I’m sure a new one and a chain will sort it. Do get it sorted though, I went over the bars once after getting out of the saddle to pedal hard and my chain slipping in the way you describe. Cranks spun with no resistance and I chucked myself off the bike essentially. Broke my helmet, glasses and saddle annoyingly.

  • Christ, yeah, I don’t want that happening. I’ve been very cautious riding it home.

  • I'm not sure that cassettes are the easiest place to spot wear, but given the chainrings were worn, it stands to reason the chain was too, and I'd be amazed if the cassette had escaped the same fate.

  • It's the cassette, it's almost always the cassette, they wear quicker than chainrings as there are usually less teeth, chain needed changing earlier than you did it if you wanted to get away without changing the cassette too. Get a new cassette, get a chain wear gauge and change it sooner next time.

  • You may also want a new chainring.

  • Yeah, I know all this, I just haven’t had time at weekends to properly clean it due to family stuff and the weather has been so shit and wet this winter it hasn’t stood a chance :(

I didn’t measure the last chain before binning it, but I can be sure it was worn out and had done a couple of thousand miles. The cassette has probably done about 8k so probably needs replacing by now anyway.

The chainring will get replaced too, just trying to find a bargain.

  • Chain is the main thing, that goes first and then wears the rest, keep on top of new chains and everything else lasts a lot longer.

I can't help you myself, but there are plenty of current and former (mostly former these days) couriers on here, and I thought I'd bump this question. There are also some threads that people have started over the years, although undoubtedly the nature of the business has changed somewhat since then.

I did that on a poorly-adjusted Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub, and ended up landing face first on the very pointy railings outside the University Library in Cambridge. I still bear the scars.

When I was a boy on the motorbike circuit, the rule of thumb was the same as it was for WWI pilots - you either didn't last two weeks, or you were in it for the duration. Neither seems like an appropriate run for gap filling. If you're serious about moving on to something better in a few months, I'd advise taking almost any other job than courier. Your first couple of months, particularly on the bike circuit, are going to be shit. You're not going to earn any money, and you might die. If you just want to fill the empty hours in a job with no barrier to entry, rent a Prius and go Ubering. You still won't make any money, but at least you'll be warm, dry and relatively safe.

  • Just buy that headset - you'll have spare bearings, that you will one day need!

  • A somewhat weird question - anyone knows anyone who studies or works at Coventry University, the campus that is actually in Coventry.

I need to go for a conference next month and thinking of cycling to and from the station otherwise it’d be a combo of walk / tube / bus / train, which would kill me...

Wanna know if around the campus I am going is generally safe to lock up bikes / if there are usually enough places to lock up bikes etc etc

I’d cycle all the way if I could...

  • It's a short walk from the station, but you could cycle if you want. Locking up is just like in any other big city, a couple of d locks will be fine for a few hours I'm sure.
