Proper selvedge jeans

Saw that headline a couple of days ago... saw that it was Vice and read the whole thing tongue in cheek. I see loads of kids wearing jeans. But they're all Levi's from charity and thrift shops. And that's okay. I also see kids wearing work trousers and cords and everything else in between. Maybe it's just New York, but there's a high school next to the university I work at which is literally chock full of some of the best dressed people I've ever seen. Killer outfits.

Of course kids are against denim. If it's shit and / or it makes you look like a dad. What are dads wearing? selvedge and brown boots right?

I have some jeans I need to shrink & do the 1st soak but I don't have a bath. Anyone done a bucket soak? Looks quite straight forward but any tips trick or warning on how not to fuck it up would be handy.

I bought a big container from a pound shop type place... just as good as a bath imho. You could do a quick cold wash as well if you have that option on your washing machine.

Rather not do a cold wash as last time I used a machine Itvwwnt into a spin and made them streaky. But good to know a tub/bucket works just as well was worried that having to fold over jeans would effect the soak

A cold wash inside out is totally fine. Just don't put it on a spin. The spin is the killer.

Ive been fine with spins of 400 and less. But I don't have super expensive denim (Uniqlo budget iron heart dreams)

I treated my self to a pair of samurai when I was in osaka. Very nice but need to shrink and get some alterations done just dont want them to go streaky, did that to a pair of Edwin a few years ago.

I can understand, I think you'll be ok if you don't spin them.

Yeah I'll do a tub soak I don't trust my washing machine just moved flats and it's had done some strange washes. 2hr wash when I thought it was a quick was cold when I thought it was hot. The samurai jeans are v nice want to get them soaked and altered for the 2 month period I can wear jeans here with out sweating my nuts off.

I personally will not use a washing machine for denim - or any pure cotton trousers, for that matter - having learned the hard way that those ghastly vertical creases can appear even without a spin. This is especially the case with heavier denim: my N&F Elephants have faint lines down them, presumably just from resting in the bottom of the machine between cycles. Same with some ED-55 chinos, which I think had a cold wash and a slow spin (400rpm).

If you have a bath - or other means by which to wash denim by hand - I highly recommend using it for this purpose. Cold water if you want to minimise shrinkage, hot if you want to encourage it. Drip dry.

Reminded me that I have some APC PNS jeans which I need to shift due to middle-aged spread. Tag is 31" but measured is 32-34: 16 across the waistband laid flat, but will comfortably stretch to 17 when pulled as if wearing, and they will stretch with wearing - just not quite to 35.5 as my true waist now is. Inside leg measured is bang on 32". Never adjusted, probably shrunk an inch from new.

Worn for probably a year, hand-washed twice, but been sitting on a shelf unloved for a few years waiting for me to achieve the impossible. Lovely fades, loads of life left.

No idea what to ask but the market will tell me. Start at £40 posted?
