92.0 1hr turbo but big lunch and almost certainly beers tonight will slow this rate of descent.

  • Gonna bump this thread.

Two years ago just after Xmas, I stepped on the scales and weighed like 95kg. Since then I’ve lost weight and got fitter (78kg). This year hasn’t seen huge weight loss but have continued to lose fat. Ran a sub 3:30 first marathon in September and other than an annoying injury have never felt fitter.

As its the season of excess I thought there might be a few people who had thought about weight loss in the new year. My advice: have an awesome holiday season full of eating, drinking and enjoyment. Come back here in the new year, set yourself a goal and tell everyone and then keep updating us.

  • My time-window eating didn't work. As soon as I'd get on the piss (which, let's face it is every day for me during Dec) it'd fall apart or I'd be WFH and doing turbo in the mornings or something would kick the routine to shit.

Gonna try and do a full day fast today in the hope of shrinking the stomach a bit before NYE Polish xmas and then Xmas day going mental with mates. ALL THE FOOD ALL THE BEERS! (same as every other day just someone else is cooking)

What do most people do on the 5:2? 0 calories on the fast days?

  • Windowed eating didn't work for me, but neither will most things during Dec.

You still have 500kcal on fast days? Why not 0kcal?

  • Good advice imo. I'm trying to get out running/riding but also trying to eat literally everything.

  • Ha, prevention is better than cure! Still planning my fasting days over the Xmas period. Fasting today, then probably on the 27th too. I found that after not fasting for a week on holiday, I was actually looking forward to it! 4 months of 5:2 and I can’t see myself stopping. Weight has stabilised at 80kg down from 85.5. Hoping that returning to running (just been given the all clear to run again from my physio) will help take an extra few kgs off.

Interestingly, I always thought that my 20-30 mile running weeks = ~4000kcal, which is similar to the deficit from 2 fasting days a week. Last time I stopped running my weight went up to 85kg, and back to 80 after a few months of running, the same as fasting has done.

Also, my first run in around 6 months was a world apart from what it usually feels like after a lay-off. Dunno whether that’s just because I’m not heavier, or if fasting helps maintain fitness - there seems to be all sorts of claims about the benefits of fasting, all of which I take with a pinch of salt.

    /csb etc

  • I do wonder this sometimes, and as I haven't attempted 0kcal I can't say it wouldn't work, but it does feel like 500 gives a good feeling of cutting back, without having too much effect on productivity etc. I have a physical job, so I'm worried I'd just totally bonk halfway through the day with 0kcal. I noticed the first few times I fasted that I struggled to concentrate and it felt like my brain was stalling, but that has really gone away now. The two 250-ish kcal meals make more of a difference than you'd think - especially if you do a bit of exercise and need to eat after. The mental benefit of a little bit of food to look forward to definitely helps as well.

The more puritanical of the IF crowd deffo seem to think that even 15kcal would "ruin" a fast, but I have also noticed that those people either tend to have a lot more weight to lose or are simply trying to be the most extreme faster on the block. Eg, I saw a guy advocating 12-6pm eating windows with 3x 24hr fasts a week 6pm-6pm. Which actually means you have 42 hr fasting 3 times week. He had lost a lot of weight, but still had a fair chunk of weight to lose - and I seriously doubt that most people could adapt to such a schedule. It just seems like such a bonkers way of fixing a weight issue.

  • Fasting actually doesn't sound like such a bad idea with the Christmas meals coming up.

And since there is no work to go to / gym to go to on the days after, the performance hit/slight annoyance hit I get from it is fine as well.

Normally it doesn't work for me, but, yes, generalization, research shows women tend to do less well on fasting compared to men.

It only works for me after a day I really indulged, with 5/2 on fasting days I would just not be bothered much with anything at all on those days, so I rather calorie count.

But the best diet is always the one you can stick to.

  • 01/04/19 - 82.2
    01/07/19 -76.4
    01/08/19 - 73.7
    31/10/19 - 75
    23/12/19 - 75.2

70 by may 1st. new year new goal.

  • But the best diet is always the one you can stick to.

Preach. I found keto to be the most effective, but there is no way I am giving up carbs forever #breadlife

  • I've done fasts before and I normally feel fine during them on 0kcal but I have a desk job so it's probably quite a bit easier. I still cycle in normally but I don't know how successful tonight's planned turbo sesh will be. Muscle glycogen levels should be ok but it's the mental aspect of thinking I'm underfueled that will mess with me. Will see what I feel like tonight though. Depends how frisky I get on the commute :)

Most diet commentators online just parrot whatever fad shit they most recently believed in. I'd want to read the studies. I'm sure you lose more weight when fasting more but I'm still trying to train as well as function mentally with work so that's not gonna work for me. I'm the first to get hangry.

  • 24hr fast done. Tired this morning. Can't face getting on the turbo. This is why I don't do it often.
I might smash a pre-workout and do an easier session or maybe have brekkie and do the harder session later in the day.

  • Given into the Christmas feasting.
Expecting 73kg approx 2nd Jan, back down to 66kg by March...

  • Ha, you don't do things by half! But yes, coffee, coffee is always the answer.

  • Nah, if you're gonna do it, do it properly (unless you can get away with doing it half arsed, then always do it half-arsed) :)

I've still not eaten but I did just do 1hr of tempo on the turbo w/ pre-workout so there's some cals in that.

  • The first 9% beer is gonna be a fucking doozy on a properly empty stomach...

  • Just checking this thread is still here for next week D:

  • 82.1kg this morning, which puts me consistently at around the 82 mark down from 84-85. Let’s see if two weeks of (very bad) skiing can get me within shouting distance of 80kg.

  • two weeks of (very bad) skiing

You can post that one in there yourself

  • I didn't gain any weight... It seems an ill partner that meant very little alcohol and sitting in the house eating just two meals a day (chocolate desserts and cheese were involved...even so calories must have been low) due to lack of appetite is a winning strategy ;)

  • Illness is a winner!
    Have a great 2020!

  • Tx and you too! :)

Btw didn't buy Shloer but work fridge was filled with it, real plonk or no plonk for me ;)

  • Has been a good year for me. Have shipped 10kg but that only tells half the story as I've put on a fair whack of muscle too. Who knows, maybe I'll give that cycling lark a go again next year.

  • Checking in for the first time.

83.7kg this morning which is the heaviest I think I’ve ever been.

I’ve been off the bike and dormant for far too long, partly due to a 20month old toddler, partly due to laziness. Generally, I eat well during the day but am too susceptible to a late evening treat and/or beer which also needs to be curbed.

Planning to get back on the turbo from the weekend (2-3 times per week) along with free weight training (1-2 times per week), longer rides on the weekend when I can. Also looking to knock the late evening treats and limit drinking to one day a week so that the above isn’t too much of a shock and remains (fingers crossed) sustainable.

Medium-term goal is to get back to, and sustain, 78kg which was always my typical weight when active. Having been dormant for so long I dread to know my body composition at present and believe the above should make marked improvements. Beyond that I would like to target 75kg but know I will need to make drastic changes to get there.

Will aim to check in when I can and hope the New Year optimism can be sustained. Any advice or critique much welcomed.
