Hibernating uses zero power, as RAM is saved to disc, and needs a press on the power switch to wake it up and copy disc back to RAM. I think it's disabled by default these days.
Sleep uses very little power, just enough to preserve RAM and check for USB events etc.
Hybrid sleep (which I think you have to enable) copies RAM to disc as well in case of power loss e.g. running out of battery while asleep.
It sounds like it's hibernating rather than sleeping.
