  • Very much looking forward to hearing this.

  • Flick through the others, there’s loads. The Stress Factor ones are all live sets I recorded from an internet radio station about ten years ago. Mostly hardcore and jungle. This one’s quite fun - starts off with the ‘narcotic suite’ Gilted Gen Prodigy tracks with some hardcore tunes (Renegade Snares and Warpdrive by Crystl) mixed in on top. Excuse any lame radio chat, but that was kind of a rule of the station that you had to do a little bit of hosting: https://hearthis.at/theorie/theorie-mix-stress-factor-radio-10/

Back on the digital stuff, I’ve been watching this video quite a few times and trying to get my head around it. It’s wildly creative and must be so satisfying to come up with a transition like it - but it almost is a bit like when you realise that a stand up comedian comes out and tells the same jokes every night as if they’d just made it up. https://youtu.be/3dl2Lpnqy0w

  • Just had the Deck Doctor around to fit LED target lights, MK5 pitch controls and upgraded phono leads.

  • Wow. Blown away by this. The turntables are from '88 and '95, and have come from one family (friend's cousins) before I bought them. I don't think I ever took them anywhere - maybe one house party. Just bedroom use.

When the Deck Doctor was at work, he did say that one pitch (the 88) was really worn and was way out, and that they would be different beasts when he'd finished, and he wasn't joking. Only had about a half hour mix, and the new pitches just lock. Once the tunes are matched, I can just leave them more or less. Maybe tiny adjustments. Before I'd be having to make quite a lot of adjustment throughout the mix. I can't wait to have a massive session now.

  • I get a chance to play on a set that’s been treated by Deck Doctor, you will be happy with those additions.

My friend had all blue lights fitted.

  • While I’m here. There are a couple of demos recorded on those before they were serviced.
I haven’t played in ages up to that point, messed up a disco mix towards the end a bit.

First one is mostly synthy 80s Disco and edits, second is mostly modern day Electro Funk.

  • I keep looking wistfully at my dusty old vestax decks (in my 5yr old twins' bedroom) and thinking about plugging it all back in again.

I recently recovered the data from my old studio mix PC and enjoyed listening to my old mixes, even though they were a bunch of crap.

I'm on mixCloud as davey_cakes if you fancy a miserable evening

  • Got Remember The Rollerz on now. Nice selection. Mix of Helicopter and Remember the Roller 👌 and Lion Heart is such a tune. Was basically crying to a buddy at the weekend about what became of Dillinja 😔

  • The eagle has landed. Report incoming.

  • First impressions of this and being quite a noob at digital djing. This is using the ‘djay’ app from Algoriddim.

    1. Not compatible with all speakers. I have a UE Megaboom bluetooth speaker with an aux in. For whatever reason, the sound from the speaker was a fraction of a second behind what was the actual master output. This made beat matching using that speaker basically impossible. Works fine with other equipment, though.
    2. Too much choice! Being able to select everything from Spotify is a blessing and a curse. It’s like watching Netflix. What I need are carefully curated playlists. The readily available ones that contain classics of various genres aren’t always that useful. E.g. almost all vocal tracks, too many anthems or just too much of a range. Time to hunt out or make some that have been created with digital djing in mind.
    3. Watching waveforms can fry your brain. I think the human brain must prioritise visual stimulus over aural which, coming new to this, means my brain is fighting with what it knows best. Telling myself not to look at the waveforms and just listen provides much better results. This is especially true of music that isn’t just 4 to the floor.
    4. The BPM detection and syncing only really works on 4 to the floor stuff. House and techno is so easy to mix! Mixing my preferred DNB or garage you basically need to forget about any BPM or syncing. It won’t work.
    5. Build quality. The faders feel amazing and the whole thing is solid. More a comment on the djay software, but aside from the delay issue with the UE speaker, everything is super responsive. The loop and cue buttons are instant, as is the fader, enabling you to cut up between tracks seamlessly.

For something that costs £100, this thing is awesome. I haven’t had a chance to turn it up and really try and put a mix together, so will add more thoughts when I’ve had a good session.

  • Ta for the review was looking to get something simple and easy to put some mixes together. This sounds just right. What size is it as space is an issue for me.

  • Tiny. About 40cm long and 25cm wide.

  • One thing to bear in mind is the cost of Spotify premium and the subscription to djay...

That’s not your only option, though. You can use rekordbox and WeDJ too etc. It’s just that only djay supports Spotify, and I’m already on my bro’s Spotify family account.

  • Wow was expecting it to be bigger. Just what I looking for 👍

  • I have a Spotify family account is that the same and I'm happy to buy from bandcamp and get digital downloads. 👍

  • Here’s a vid of this in action...

  • Really enjoyed this. Love this track off it

  • Glad you’ve enjoyed my odd selection, appreciate it!

  • Anyone used Denon gear? I’m considering a more advanced, all-in-one digital set up. Specifically, the Prime 2.

The positives are that you can mix from streaming services (Tidal, Beatport), even over wifi. It has a hard drive bay, so you can load up your files and leave them on there - or just via USB. It’s compatible with Rekordbox. It’s fairly compact.

The negatives (or unknowns) are that it’s only 2 channels - so I wouldn’t be able to use it to create a combined vinyl set-up, although that would command more space than I have. I’d use same amp/speakers, but would just have to plonk it on top of the closed deck covers when in use (or power it up elsewhere with some other speakers I have. I think it’s portable enough). Although it’s Rekordbox compatible, I’m not sure how compatible- it might have issues. I’m also not sure how easy or possible it would be to mix back and forth between your own files and something on Tidal/Beatport - surely that would be simple, though. The filters are limited.

Main competitor is Pioneer XDJ RX2 (or RR - can’t work out the difference). That would give better Rekordbox obviously, but doesn’t have the streaming.

Essentially I want to continue messing about with streaming as I have been with the DDJ 200, without the faff of setting it up with the phone and having to use the phone for it at all. Plus have a clearer path towards creating and building my own library of files. In combination to what I already have and what’s in my Bandcamp, I’d probably start just ripping my vinyl by year and try and do a certain amount each week. Best laids plans and all that, though - that’s why I think the streaming is so important to have.

  • Well I’m pretty close to pulling the trigger on a DJ Prime GO. Most of the features of the Prime 2/4 but even smaller and more portable. I like that the software and UI is identical across the range.

    https://youtu.be/V6csagtKmYk

  • Still procrastinating on the purchase of the Prime GO, but I’m getting nearer. Not least as I think I figured put how to combine it with my existing set up in order to mix between digital/vinyl - basically by running the GO into the third channel on my Xone32.

I’d probably do this anyway for some recording purposes, as I think you can’t use the built in record function if you play any tracks that are streamed.

So if I were to be doing a vinyl mix and wanted to bring in a digital track, I’d have that track beat matched and with the fader on the GO fully open, then bring it into the mix with the up fader on the third channel on the Xone32. If I wanted to mix another digital track, I’d then use the mixer on the GO, or if I wanted to mix a vinyl track I’d make sure that I bring that in with the up fader only.

A lot of thinking out loud there, sorry!

  • Just to continue killing this thread, I got a good Black Friday deal on the Prime GO, so should be up and running on that in a few days.

Anyone have general tips on managing a digital library? File type, settings, naming conventions etc?

  • It kind of depends where you plan on playing but if you can have everything as wav (or flac) that would be best. A lot is made of the difference between mp3 and and lossless but tbh if the mp3 is 320kbps most people can't tell the difference and I found that it's only in a club with a big soundsystem that you can can hear the difference and even then its most noticeable when you mix from a wav to an mp3.

With naming conventions I always did artist first then track name as I never remember track names but always remembered songs by the producer, I don't think there's a right or wrong but I put an underscore instead of the spaces in the name (artist_track_name) as this usually makes it easier for different systems to read files without adding weird symbols (it's not likely but I remember copying files from mac to PC and things got scrambled)

How you organise things is the most important, do you group by BPM/Key etc that's just going to be a bit of trial and error to see what works for you, what I would advise is that if you play out you take a record bags worth of tracks (no more that 50) on a USB stick to make it easier to play a set, if you've got thousands of tracks sometimes you can get paralysed buy too much choice or just lose flow in a mix by being too all over the place.

Anyway I haven't DJ'ed in years so feel free to ignore everything I say :)

  • I also haven't DJ'd in years and missing my 1210s which I stupidly sold ages ago. Kept collecting records tho. Not got much experience with the digital but I did go on the Gadget show years ago to try out the Tonium Pacemaker, was invited by my old brummie friend DJ Rebekah. Got to meet Susie Perry and everything. That's me on the right of the pic below.

Interested in that little DDJ thing^ did it stand the test of time @J0nathan or more of a fun thing?

Anyone up for doing a forum open decks thing once this corona thing calms down a bit? @J0nathan @doubleodavey maybe family fun day styleee so I can bring me kidz down, thinking daytime boozing and dnb.

Here's an ancient mix cloud link I unearthed of one of my old NTS radio shows, its a neglected link and I think the same show is on there twice, not much if any beat matching and quite a lot on random chat, genres(mainly dub), incomprehensible stuff but you can catch a vibe. To be honest its so randomly put together I'd be surprised if anyone can make it to the end!
