Neoprene gloves work by keeping a layer of warm sweat between your skin and the fabric. It's not for everyone and not great for commuting IMO (I rinse mine after every ride).
Saying that I know a very experienced Swedish audaxer that swears by Marigold washing up gloves when it's raining...
