As I said before, my guess is that this isn't about having a bike indoors.

the wall was covered in tyre marks from it swinging round and scuffing the wall and after repainting I needed something to fix that. I ended up with a different solution though.
Which is?! Woah... you can’t just casually mention finding a different solution, and then leave us hanging!
I was trying to get my beloved to agree to painting out our hall a nearly-black grey colour - you know, like the colour of those tyre marks darling...

What is it then?

She is breaking up with you.
For a dude with outdoor bikes.

Possibly not the most practical solution. The plan is to buy a house with garden and basement ...

@ChainBreaker - just noticed this thread.
Firstly, chapeau for trying to illustrate the norm for bike storage by crowd sourcing answers from an absolutely bias group that is probably atypical of general bike ownership.
Second, it sounds like you're dealing with an irrational person. You need to tackle this on an emotional level rather than trying to give sensible arguments.
This is a great 8 point guide of how not to win over someone taking an emotional stance:
https://www.lifehack.org/359093/step-step-guide-arguing-with-irrational-personIt's worth a read to ensure that you don't end up making any of those mistakes (obviously things like 1. are still valid).

...but in the interests of your poll
If you do store your bike outside your main residence, what measures do you take?
In the past bikes I have stored bikes outside my main residence as follows:
Flat / in communal areas:
- my OH's bike with D-lock which I didn't care if it got stolen.
- a bike I didn't mind being stolen with a D-lock and rope through front wheel and stair rail
- a nice commuter fixed if it was for a very short period, with D-lock through stair rails
- (in a borrowed, converted flat with 2 other flats and a padlocked cellar I had the nice bike chained to a supporting beam plus D-lock, with the commuter fixed just D-locked)
flat / in public spaces:
- a bike I didn't mind being stolen locked to bike rack with two good D-Locks and a motorbike chain.
Terraced house in middle of terrace (ie only neighbours or the very motivated could access rear)
- back garden; D-lock + rope lock to fixed object.
- back garden light well; no lock as only accessible via house.
- front of the house; D-locked to railings for very short period of time never overnight.
- my OH's bike with D-lock which I didn't care if it got stolen.

We're lucky to have a dedicated bike storage/garage. Before that we used to store them on the balcony, somewhat covered, but still not ideal. I wouldn't keep anything but a beater outside in the elements and even that would probably break my heart. I guess it's easier when you only have two bikes to worry about.

Have you drawn her attention to the fact bikes are great for hanging up washed socks and pants/knickers to dry?
If after that final plea bargain she's still not seeing sense, dump her, outside with the bins.

It used to be all bikes inside.
Currently two bikes inside, the commuters, used to have them in the hallway in a 3 bed flat. Though I also lock mine up in the communal stairwell, 4th floor of 6.
Other four bikes are downstairs on the ground floor in a Pram shed/storage storage space, which is behind a metal fence and you need to enter the block to get to..
I’d never consider leaving a bike locked up outside the block overnight.
Bikes live inside.Thinking about buying a house, where bikes are stored, or can be stored is a big factor in the decision making process..

Has this been resolved yet?

That's for you two to figure out! This thread isn't going to help...

Grumpy git
Ah yours must be slightly different then, ours is something like 2200x1800cm so tons of space for bikes/climbing and camping gear.
Our heat unit is tucked away properly.
