So I’ve never used noise cancelling headphones before and I’m at home now so maybe it’s just too quiet, but how do people put up with the hiss?
I don't have 'the hiss' with my B&W PX. I think the sealed up underwater sensation without noise cancelling is normal though, it's because they seal your ears off from the outside world and without the mikes picking up the noises from the outside world and relaying them to you via the drivers inside the headphones it sounds like your ears are sealed off from the outside world because, well, they are.
I would observe that noise cancelling cans are hard to get right and this is Apple's first go...

sounds like the blank tape noise at the end of a cassette
Did you turn on Dolby B in settings?

Thanks for elaborating on this, I did struggle a bit with the whole concept tbh.

Good noise cancelling headphones don't have the hiss. It used to be an issue many years ago but you wouldn't expect it nowadays.

It can’t be tinnitus because there is no hiss when the headphones are in and the noise cancellation is off. As soon as I turn it on, the hiss is there. If I switch to Transparency mode, audible hiss, take out the left headphone, can hear the hiss in the right, turn off the noise cancellation it’s gone.
Maybe my hearing is too sensitive or something, but it’s a clearly white noise from the noise cancellation, like I can literally hear it fade in and out as I switch between the modes on my ipad.

Just googled the general “I can hear noise” issue with noise cancelling headphones and there’s a ton of articles and fellow nerds as uptight about it as me.
The hiss you hear in active noise canceling headphones is just the
self-noise' or noise floor' of the electronics,”I guess it’s something some people are going to be able to hear while others aren’t. So anyway, I’ll be returning them. Gotta say the design and size is such an improvement over regular AirPods, they look so much better.

So I smashed my iPhone screen, it was insured with a third party I2G insurance. Sent it in for repair, received it yesterday. First look at it, the screen edges feel rough almost sharp in places, but that’s bearable.
Then this issue. The screen looks fine but the more I use it, white spots gradually start to appear and a orange gradient particularly on the left. If I turn the screen off for a while, it’s all gone and looks fine again.
Any idea what the fuckers have done? Is this a ghosting issue? Anyone seen this kind of thing before?

Does not look like a legit replacement...

Yeh that’s what I thought. It’s a strange issue though as this is the same screen when it first comes on. Takes around 5 minutes before it looks like the shitshow above.

I thought it might be the CPU getting warm, but I think the battery is on the left on every recent model of iPhone, so either it's getting hot or swelling against the screen, which is even worse.
(Or it's just a shite screen)
Get the whole thing replaced.

Good shout, I hadn’t thought of it potentially being a heat issue. It worked perfectly before, even with the smashed screen. I’ve sent a fairly pissed off email saying I want the phone replaced, we’ll see how that goes.

Hard drive with all my music failed. Will be a massive ballache to try to recreate it.
Only silver lining is it gets me out of iTunes, what’s the hive minds music player of choice, which will work across iOS and on a nas? Plex? -

No backups?
-
• #14746
Nope!😪 Have been trying to start backing up stuff for the last couple of months, never got round to it, #littlepeoplestoppingyoudoingshit
Will make time to back up everything else in the next week or so. -

Argh that sucks. One of those life lessons...
In terms of player of choice, it’s an interesting time to be in that situation as iTunes has effectively been deprecated and it’s replacement has a proprietary database format. Plex could be a good shout but if you’re starting from scratch, isn’t it all gone anyway?
I’d say just go with Spotify (cross platform, good algorithms for finding new stuff, high quality streams...) unless you have a large physical library you’re willing to transcode.
If it’s the latter, then a backed-up nas with Plex or VLC would do.

• #14748
I’m the latter, have been considering plex for the movies/tv series I’ve downloaded already, so might be good to do it for the music as well.
Just have to start copying cd’s again! Fuck my life. -
• #14749
Little people and a busy life, surely just ditch the CD’s altogether and embrace the convenience of streaming services?

Was speaking to a friend about this have real issues with subscription services, paying monthly for it, just rubs me the wrong way. I don’t know why and can’t explain my antipathy..
Could be faulty. No hiss on mine or any other ANC earphones / headphones I have.
Are you sure you don’t have tinnitus or something?
